Would a spoiler on a 3rd generation 4runner look okay or will it look funny?

Anybody on this forum have one? Is it just for looks or does it have functionality?

 

Functionality wise... I wouldn't bet on it.

Most spoilers, air foils and air dams won't do much of anything in around-town driving. Depending on the general aerodynamics of the vehicle, you shouldn't expect any measurable downforce below 70-80 mph, and nothing appreciable below about 120.

Those numbers can be reduced (and thus you can increase downforce at a lower speed) if the car is designed to have a tail on the rear deck. For example, a car would be designed such that the air coming across the hood, over the roof and around the sides is directed to the rear deck in order to be trapped by an air dam.


But on our trucks, the biggest thing that it will do is disrupt the airflow around the rear window so that the sucking of exhaust fumes through there is minimized.

 

I assume you are talking about the Jaos REAR SPOILER? The one I sell looks nice and is mainly for looks. It may, however, help keep some of the dust down on the rear window, but that's about it.

I don't know what to say. It's er...um...uh...well...um... Let's just leave it at that.. To each their own, I guess.

 

I'd have to be in favor of the boss man on that one...
But the Jaos one isn't too bad. We already have the "wing"/air deflector to keep the dust down. Why on earth would you want extra down force anyway? Do you plan on any track time in the runner? Downforce=Drag=Lower fuel economy on the hiway. I will also point out that the Jaos doesn't really add much down force it just extends the roofline out and shouldn't effect milage at all. If you gotta have it go with the jaos, otherwise, don't bother...

 

I like the look of the JAOS one. It gives you the JDM style and it's not that expensive.

As far as I know, I have the cheapest price on the JAOS™ BRAND spoiler which is $235. There are some other imitation brands, but they are not made as well.

Another option might be a genuine Toyota one as fitted to the Japanese version. This was fitted to the '96 on Hilux Surf SSR-G model. You can see it at http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=0979
This also has a powered rear mirror to help you back up. I have one of these fitted to mine (I'm in Ireland and have an import from japan) and it looks excellent, the rear mirror gives an excellent view of the rear bumper, perfect for checking for kids and animals, not to mention bollards etc when reversing (altough having the spare wheel mounted on the back does obscure the mirrors view to the right somewhat).

Hey what's a "bollard?"

 

i was just considering a spoiler just for looks and wondering if it looks funny or not. i dont race or go offroading or anything.

if i do get a spoiler, hopefully it doesnt affect my driving/mileage etc...

 

 

A bollard is a concrete filled post. You usually see them around light poles or at the entrance of a building or airport.

 

Can't wait for mine to show up in another week or two.
