Well yesterday was the first time that I ever floored the new 4Runner. It moved pretty well, but produced a slight vibration noise when at WOT & about 4k comming from the center dash area. Anybody with new runners experience anything like this?

I really don't want to dog the truck, but I kind of want to try flooring it from a few red lights to see if it continues. I have about 1200 miles right now, and this is the first I have really gotten into it at all.

Mine does that when the hamsters under the hood go on strike!!

Seriously though, some vibration can probably be expected under full throttle. I know my 2nd Gen has developed a few odd noises over time.

With only 1200 on the ticker, that sounds strange. Have you tried gunning it in neutral to listen for noises? Maybe it is something in the suspension with the squat from WOT launches. Just a thought.

I will give it a shot in neutral to see what happens. My goal was to see how responsive and what it was like before I did the deckplate and the Amsoil air filter. I have them at home sitting in the basement, along with my hood protector, that I STILL have not had time to install yet.

Hey dude...thats really weird, but i know exactly what you are talking about. Mine does the same thing. I dont really know what it was and i thought it would be unique to mine. I guess something in the dash cant handle the raw power...LOL

i'd advise against gunning it in neutral...that's not good for your engine...your engine isn't suppose to rev that high unless it's actually being used for towing or gettin up a hill. my 2 cents..

whats the difference b/w redlining it in gear and in neutral? the engine is still at the same RPMs.

Maybe I'm missing something here... but it seems to me that if you floor it (i.e. redline it), then the engine is producing waaay more RPMs than it would during "normal" driving (2000-3000 rpms). More vibrations are higher RPMs are normal and expected... it just so happed that on your rig, those vibrations showed up in your dash.

someone help me out here....i read about it when gadget told someone not to rev high in neutral cause the engine doesn't do any "work".....i wish i had that thread....i'll try to find it and repost it...sorry

I can't imagine why a little revving would hurt the engine. WOT with a heavy load is more taxing on the engine, cooling, tranny, drivetrain, etc. A little revving to diagnose a rattle/vibration should be harmless. It's not like you're gonna throw a brick on the gas and go to bed for the night with the engine at 6000rpm...

My guess is that it's like putting all your power into punching or kicking someone (or something) and missing, which hurts. No energy transfer just like a high-revving engine w/o the gears engaged. That's my guess & my analogy :rolleyes:

I'm interested in the real explanation though.

found it, but it wasn't gadget who said it..it was ESUN on ODW.....this is what he says about it...

"Engines are designed to work against resistance. In simple terms, with out that resistance, then engine's moving parts will get ahead of themselves"

it's similiar to what hboss said i suppose...thats the best i can do...maybe someone else knows more???
