I've been trying to figure out where to put my Spare tire.... I can't fit it underneath, or inside, so my options are on top of the rack, or build a swing out tire carrier off the bumper are my two choices. I wouldn't mind it up top, but my MPG is bad enough already. If i built a tire carrier, what do you think it'll cost? what hinge should i use? will i need to remove the bumper to do it?(most likely yes, but you never know) and would it be worth it?

rockware sells a bolt on swing out carrier for around 450. Given your two options, I would put it on the bumper. Keeps the rig from being top heavy and your truck is already tall. It would make it look huge. IMO. not bad, but you can make it look a bit cleaner. All it takes is more $$$$ LOL

 

Have your under truck tire carrier hacked and lifted to match your 2" body lift, and throw that 35 under there. Like steve....

I wouldn't put it on top, i've heard that can make for a very tippy ride, especially off-road.

 

Neil, Right now I can't put it under. The bumper doesn't give me the room, I can't even fit my 285 spare anymore let alone a 35. the bumper should also sit 1.5-2" closer in anyways...

 

Let the air out of the spare to make it fit?

can you trim the back of the bumper at all for extra clearance??? would it even help?? Just trying to help

 

I can't trim the bumper cause it's hitting on the hitch. I'd like to have it under there, but it just doesn't seem like it's going to happen. I can't fit it inside with my subs 'n' stuff. If it did go on a tire carrier, I've thought about doing something like a reserve gas tank where the old tire went.... just thinking out loud-

Throw it on top. The amount of money you spend on a rear tire carier will never be recouped in gas savings. Keep a heavy duty plastic bag in the back...when you go wheeling, put the tire in the bag, then put it in the back seat...or build a new sub box that will allow you to put it in the rear on top of the box.

Mine won't fit underneath either so it's on the roof. Not really tippy, but the gas mileage sucks.

I'm not sure whatever happened with the idea, but a while back somebody proposed a spare tire carrier that would slide into a receiver hitch.
Also, if you want to make/fab your own tire carrier on your bumper-you can get the tire carrier spindle from Slee:

Not sure, I don't drive it enough to keep check, but I would guess about 2. Around town you won't notice, the only place it will make a difference is highway trips.
