Hello,

Recently installed Monroe Reflex shocks/struts on my 2000 2wd 4runner after about 52,000 miles on original shocks. Ride seems a bit stiff although handling is much improved. Will shocks soften up over time a little--is there a "break-in" period for shocks?

Thinking about changing out to Monroe Sensatrac (supposedly a softer shock) but not sure if we will notice the ride being any smoother than it is now. Thanks for any input.

there isnt a shock break in period i know of, however weather conditions might somewhat effect performance

 

I put bilstiens on my wrangler and it seemed like it took them a few hundred rough miles before they got a little softer....But only I could notice it, and they didnt soften up alot but just enough for the me the driver to notice....

 

I just replaced mine with the Sensa-Tracks. I'm actually pretty pleased, but my truck is pretty old, has high milage, and I've abused it, so it kind of rattles down the road anyway.

 

Just as a followup to my original post here...I had the shop replace the Reflex with the Monroe Sensatrac. The ride now is much smoother and less "tight" on all roads. There is something given up in handling but not much. I think it was worth the trade-off.

I would say the Reflex is still a very good shock. The handling and ride with the Reflex is somewhat stiff with very little body roll or lean, corners much better than stock. With the Sensatrac a bit more lean on the corners but overall smoother, gentler ride.

The shop I went to was really good. Started off with KYB shocks (way too stiff for me), then the Reflex (still a bit too strong), finally the Sensatrac (just right). They kept switching the shocks for no charge if I said I was not happy--great customer service.

I found a trick for softening monroe reflexes. The problem is there may be gas or air in the tubes, before installing they should of been compressed and then stretched back out a couple of times to remove the air. Since my reflexes were already on the Jeep, I just jacked up each wheel and then dropped it slowly 4 or 5 times. Now the shocks are soft and smooth like they should be. They are also still tight on curves.
