Question Securing cargo area for off-roading

How do people secure their rear storage area junk so it doesn't risk flying around when off-roading? (in a 3rd gen 4rnr for me)

The OEM cargo nets seem pretty flimsy to depend on keeping a couple hundred pounds of recovery gear and the like from launching forward into the driver area. I'd like to know that even if I were to roll the rig, that I wouldn't get a 40 pound high lift air-mailed through my skull. Needless to say, the tonneau cover for the cargo area doesn't give me much comfort!

My stuff is all boxed, and I can use the tie down hooks with straps, but I was wondering if anyone has found something that will cover the whole area, like a real military webbing cargo net with hooks for the tie downs with compression straps of some sort. I suppose I could use a modified version of the camping platform I use with taller legs and just strap that down, but I'd like something a little more flexible...

I am not saying that this is a good method, but what I do is utilize the 4 anchors in the rear area and pack everything up very carefully. Heavier, larger items always go on bottom, with lighter items such as pillows, clothes, and sleeping bags resting on them. I then make an X with high strength bungee cords and ensure everything is snug. If it is only my wife and I going on the trip (which it almost always is) I try to utilize the space behind the front seats for smaller heavier items such as a toolbox or similar. If we rolled, crap would be everywhere, no doubt about it. Hopefully I will never have to deal with that though.

I run a length of doubled 1000 pound nylon line through the tiedown rings...one for the forward and one for the rear. I leave the rear seat up (forward barrier).

Then I can run 1000 pound ratchet straps forward/aft over the cargo to secure it. Works really well.

My solution is to just not keep alot of crap in the truck

Whatever I can, I strap down into the basket on the roof. Very handy investment.

This is the closest I've found to what I'm looking for:

yeah, I've thought about using the cargo nets for roof racks to hold stuff - but never have proceeded in buying one. Not sure it would be the right size.

Cool

I ran into that same problem while wheelin... I came up with my own solution instead of buying something online. You can check out what I did by going to my website. Just click on the link under my name and you're there. Here are a few sample shots.

It's just cool to hold and mumble... "I'm your worst nightmare!". Makes me feel al little like Rambo. It's just an all purpose survival knife. The kind with matches and a compass, fishing string, etc. Harbor Freight Tools special... $5.00. Couldn't pass it up. I love knives!

You may want to replace the bolts holding the rear "tie down loops" I upgraded mine to some grade 8 bolts and large washers after the stock ones twisted apart from tightening them down 1/2 turn too much.

I was only able to replace the ones closer to the rear hatch, because the ones towards the front of the vehicle aren't easily accessable. But I don't use those as much as the rear ones. I have my hi lift secured with the rear ones and they hold up very well with no rattles or movement.

i basically use a tie down and run through handles and such on the tool boxes and cooler, then strap it to the back two tie downs... would take a pic if ya like....
