Hey I was just wondering how much damage can be done running on 5 rather then 6 of my cylinders? I know that makes it run a little out of balance it's been like this for a couple months at least and was just wondering how much harm I can do still driving it until i get the money to fix it.

Loaded question....it really does depend on what is causing the one cyl to not work????
anything too far out of the no spark area and you can make a lot more damage.....
Broke con rod.
burnt valve
blown HG
cracked psition
no spark plug
.......the list can go on but all of those things can cause one cly from working and continured use with any of those can lead to bigger troubles rather quickly.....

 

Sorry forgot to mention i the reason its not working is that it has a burnt valve

 

unplug the injector for that cyl and your good to go

 

stupid question i know guys but how could you tell if you are only running on 5 cyls?

 

You'll feel an odd rhythmic rumble in the seat of your pants, your ride will sound like funk master funk , your exhaust pipe will shake itself silly and your gas gauge will quickly drift to the left. I drove home last week on 5 of 6. Couldn't figure it out until I started pulling plug wires. If you listen as you pull you will quickly find the cylinder not firing because the sound will not change when you pull the 'off' cylinder. My issue was simply a bad plug wire. Replaced the wire and I was back on top. On the other hand, I also found that I'm the newest member of the BHG club (with regards to Chickenlover, for coining the term ) . It's all good though, I've known the campaign is still open since I bought the truck

PS: Congrats on your BHG repair Chickenlover. It's not a job I'd wanna tackle!

 

alright im gonna pull the plugs tomorrow and see whats goin on becasue my gas milage dropped like crazy last week i only got 100 miles to the tank and ive checked everything that can be checked and i dont know what to check anymore and ever sence it dropped it feel like its skipping and not gettin any power...im just gonna pary to god that one of my cyls isnt blow.

 

careful pulling them wires while the eng is running....you can get one nasty hair don't and a tingle up the arm......

 

Thanks! And I'm sorry to hear about your HG failure. I know how you feel. I can't believe how many YT members have blown HG's in the last month. It's getting rediculous.

 

I actually zapped myself 5 out of 6 times. Good thing I had one bad wire!
And I was pulling from the distributor side...

 

Stoping fuel from getting there will help alot but that does not prevent any futher damage....the cyl is a now a cold spot, great for head warpage and the hg failure...if oil is flowing down that valve stem, your losing that oil for the rest of the eng and maybe running it low. Each down stroke will pull in what ever it can from where ever it can and try to fire it when the spark gets there or just dump it to exh....completly ruining what is now a repairable engine will cost more in the long run and an engine fire can more than just ruin your truck and day, IMHO no matter how you look at it running on a burnt valve can cause greater damage....park it till you can repair it, is the cheapest safest option......

 

That sucks Blair, whos going to be doing you repairs just out of curiosity? I think with my 22re I'm gonna take a week off work and do some work on it. maybe get it running a little smoother.

 

Actually, I've been looking forward to it. Don't know that I'll be getting the long block out of this one though. Haven't overheated it enough to warp the head...keeping in mind that you really WANT to, provided the campaign is still open for you. I'm leaning towards getting it done in Whitby...close to my firehall. I'm NEVER going back to Russelle Toyota in Peterborough. 3 weeks on their rental, at least three stabs at it, and 49 hours ( ) of labour pretty much convinces me that they don't know what their doing.

Chickenlover, you're right...there has been a big number of BHG's lately. Oddly enough, my last one went at this time of year, too. I think it's a function of the cold weather/longer warm-up times actually. Gotta tell you...when I read that you lost a bolt inside the block I really felt for you. And when I read that you retrieved it, I actually CHEERED! Good work

Geoff, have you checked to see if your truck is still open under the HG campaign (V06 in USA)? If it is, take it in, get the HG done and try and get them to cover the valve issue. Even if the valve issue isn't covered you're going to save long $ on the labour...they gotta remove the head, to get to the block. Worth a shot...
