Rotors!

All right all you gurus...

I got the steering wheel vibration... time to replace the rotors (or so I believe...) is it worth it to go with slotted/vented rotors? Do they make that much of a difference... or should I save some cash and go stock?

Any hints?

Well, slotted rotors are an improvement, although I don't know how much of one and I have always been a believer in fixing things so they are better than new so I would go for it.

I just went with Autozone rotors with a 1 year warranty and PF pads. My brakes have never been better.

if you want to go with "performance" rotors, go with just a slotted style, not cross drilled, Ive heard too many horror stories of cross drilled rotors cracking at the holes and coming apart catastrophically

You can get the Brembo OEM replacement rotors for about $45 each on-line. They seem to hold up better than the stock rotors. I've heard that slotted rotors can wear your pads prematurely.

When my fronts started vibrating, I went with Powerslot Rotors (slotted, not drilled) from Performance Products (since they are 10 minutes away) and got free pads. They stop much better than OEM. Very happy.

I recommend the powerslots. We put them on a lot of the big american SUV's at the brake shop I work at. They do work much better than OE. Just be sure to use a severe duty pad instead of a softer pad material. It will chew up a softer pad material. The powerslots can still warp and cause pulsation, but it is rare. Be sure that the rear brakes are adjusted properly and doing their small share of the braking to prevent future warpage of the front rotors. That's my two cents.

Did you check your aliment and balance? What about for broken belts in your tires? Here these are major problems, our roads are garbage.

Actually, it depends on how the holes are placed in the rotors that makes them susceptible to cracking. If the rotors are actually DRILLED after casting, then they are far more likely to crack over time. However, if the rotors have CAST-IN holes, they are far less likely to crack. Big difference. All race cars have rotors with holes, which should tell you something...

But, will they 'really' effect the performance on a Runner? I really can't imagine you would ever notice a difference. Drilling/slotting is really a race application. When I used to race my S2000, I had slotted/drilled rotors...I can honestly say that in the thousands of miles at lots of racetracks, I never once felt a difference with slots/holes. Perhaps they ran a bit cooler and had better heat dispersal, but this never translated into faster laptimes. And the courses I ran were very hard on brakes.

I replaced my rotors/calipers all with Bendix stuff...basically remanufactured calipers and new rotors. Stops on a dime and gives 9 cents back in change.

The bottom line, I wouldn't pay one red cent for rotors with holes/slots more than those without for a Runner. You will never, ever notice a difference in performance. Only a lighter wallet...

Just my dos centavos....

Autozone online (in which the warranty applies to any store) ran me about $170 shipped for everything. Rotors and pads.

Well worth it. The rotor shimee was driving me nuts!

the drilled rotors affect the structural integrity... i dont know about the slotted, i guess they help in heat dissipation. i just bought brembo rotors from tire rack, they should be in by tomorrow. i will also be installing PF pads.

Mine are driving me nuts also. The only problem is they are only 6 months old.
I needed to do alot of hard/long braking on a mountain while the bed was loaded down (driving behind a semi, so I couldn't do any coasting).

Can the rotors be turned while on the truck? I don't feel like having to tear down my front hubs in order to have them turned?
