Replacing Coil Boots part of PM?

Hi everyone!

I did not find anything browsing Toyota scheduled maintenance schedules, nor forum threads, so want to ask:

When is everyone changing their coil boots? Every spark plug change? Every-other? Not until misfiring starts? Etc?

I just hit 120K miles and I want to stay up on my preventative maintenance. Since our 4Runners do not have distributor caps/rotors (which I normally would change when changing spark plugs), I was not sure if I should be changing the coil boots at spark plug intervals or not...

Thanks!
James

I've never heard anything called a coil boot. If you're talking about the spark plug wire, which runs from the coil pack to the spark plug, then yes, replace them when you replace the plugs.

No, not talking about the wires:

Was not aware you could change those, i have never messed with that. For that price i would not either, i would just buy a new coil for slightly more if i ever needed it.

Wait until you have a coil go bad, then replace the coil and the boot at the same time. No need to replace something that is not broke.

If you are looking to spend $$$ on PM for ignition, plugs and wires are a good start.

After getting more pricing on boots-only vs. coils-boots pkg, I will take everyones' advise and wait. I think I'm pretty well current on my PM otherwise. When I purchased my gem at 80K almost 2 yrs ago (120K now) I wanted a good baseline and replaced timing belt, water pump, drive belts, camshaft seals, crankshaft seal, tensioner, both idlers, coolant, thermostat, plugs/wires, rear axle seals, tires, and switched all fluids to fully synthetic. Mechanic did note my valve cover gaskets were "seeping" but weren't worth the effort to address yet...I 'think' I remember him saying he snugged them up and haven't had any issues.

Now, just gotta save up some $$ for new OME suspension and tires!

Thanks for the input!

I replaced the boots with some I purchased at Advance. I would do them long before I replaced my coils.

I assume you replaced just the 3 on the coil side?
