I am trying to replace my front fuel line (after the filter) on my 2000 4Runner. The dealer quoted me a price of $150. Is there a less expensive alternative to repairing or replacing it? Thanks.

 

Depending if you have the time... you can replace a section with high pressure rubber fuel hose and just double clamp it on each end. I bet you can do it for about $35 yourself.

 

For what's its worth, my first impression is that $150 is a good price to have the dealer do that work. The fuel line itself is probably not cheap. Is the problem damage to the fuel line at the filter? I know those filters can be stubborn. Sometimes changing a rusty filter can damage the fuel line. Is that what happened to you?

Anyway, if the damage is at the filter, and the rest of the fuel line is ok, you may want to cut off the damaged connector and replace with a small section of fuel line and hose clamps. Fuel can be dangerous and the pressure the system is under is a variable that needs to be considered. I have not done this fuel patch with rubber fuel line myself, its just an idea. Perhaps others with experience will chime in..

 

$150 was just for the part - not labor. I can't get the filter off of the line. I will damage it if I try to remove it. Thanks.

I wouldn't use rubber hose for high pressure fuel line. Perhaps what you can do (and I've considered this, since I'm in the same boat):

- cut the old fuel line after the filter...somewhere where it's straight for several inches.
- take that piece of line in and have a new piece of hard line cut, and flared on the filter end.
- use a compression fitting to join the other end with the factory line.

Basically, you're putting a patch in, but it's using hard (steel) line instead of rubber. I'm not exactly sure where you'd get the steel line, but I bet a hardware store like Ace could flare the end for you.

Did they give you a part number? I'd be interested to know what that is...then look for it cheaper online. For example, had I had the opportunity, I would have seen that an OEM inner tie rod online was less than $120, but the dealer charged me over $170 for the same part. Ridiculous.

Depends on your production date (4th column). Either way...$30!

Production date should be shown on the drivers door jam. There is a sticker with all sorts of production info. Production date should be at the top of the sticker.
