Do the newer model 4runners and/or tacomas come with a cv type driveshaft in the rear?

I thought I read somewhere they did but now i feel i may be mistaken.

I need to install a rear cv driveshaft on my 86 4runner after lifting to get rid of vibrations. I was hoping i could easily swap in a shaft from a newer model (probably have to redrill flanges) as opposed to getting a front shaft retubed or paying for a new one from high angle drivelines.

cv as constant velocity? like the front axles on new ifs trucks? or are you talking about double cardan units?

 

I'm referring to double cardan unit driveshafts. Seems that a lot people just refer to it as a cv driveshaft (unless I've completely misunderstood lots of what i read, which is entirely possible). It'd be the same type of driveshaft that most of us have for the front already. Just wondering if any trucks have that same type of driveshaft in the rear.

 

i believe that the 4runners have these, however, im not sure if the tacomas do. but i do know that the tacoma driveshafts are longer. hope this helps

The rear and front drive shafts on my 2004 4Runner Limited V8 with full time 4WD have U-joints.

Yes, your 4Runner does have u-joints or what are less commonly called cardan joints (after their inventer I believe). What he's looking for are two back-to-back u-joints in what is called a double cardan CV joint. Does your 4Runner have one (or two) of these on the rear driveshaft?

Personally, I'd just pick up a '84-'85 front driveshaft and have it re-tubed. Use the late model SFA driveshaft because they have the higher angle CV joint and have the proper sized bolt holes. You will need to redrill or replace the output flange on your t-case though since the pattern is not the same, the single cardan flnge is a square pattern, the double cardan flange is rectangular.

 

No double Cardan CV joints on my 04. One u-(Cardan)joint at each end of the rear drive shaft. Same for the front shaft. The 04 V6 is a different animal from my V8, however, and may have a different setup. I only speak for the 04 V8.
