Reading Vin Codes
Hello,
I was contemplating moving to a set of larger tires and wanted to know what axle ratio I had on my 01 4Runner. I took my vin to the dealer and they were no help. Short of pulling things a part, is there a way to figure things out?
It has the 265/70/16 tire package on from the factory.
I've run across a few sites but each one ends up with a different result.
VZN185L-GKPGKA
C/TR 1CO/FA17
ATM A04A/A340F
According to this site I have 4.10s

I suppose I can take get it up to cruising speed a get an RPM reading but I was hoping to be more technical than that. Any suggestions?

To my knowledge vin numbers DO NOT contain the gear code info, that's what the gear code on the vin plate is for.

Hope this helps. sorry the quailty is not great. first one is published by toyota. second is a look up for ring and pinion off toyota's fish

PM sent.. just in case. I'll take it out on the highway in the next few days with O/D off to double check (snow flurries currently). If memory serves me the tach hovers around 3000 ish.
What's the old formula? RPM = Gear x MPH x 336 / Tire Height in Inches? Wow that was fast, I'll have to road test to figure out the difference between 4.30 or 4.56...

The gear charts have been notoriously wrong for 3rd gen 4Runners.
I think he has 4.10's.

Plug your numbers in with possible gear ratios and when you get the right ratio the numbers will match up.

Seat of the pants foggy memory response supports your results toyotaPmanager.
Converting back from 100km/h is roughly 62.1mph and a 4.30 ratio on 30.6" tire works out to be 3011 RPM. The result "sounds" about right. I will double check and get back to you when the skies clear.

You should search this topic as it has come up multiple times. I went through the same thing, and every chart either got it wrong, or offered multiple options for gear ratio. Even dealerships have looked up people's ratios and gotten it wrong. Before you waste any money buying a component that is the wrong ratio, just do the actual measurement...
Do the spin test. It is very easy, and is relatively foolproof. Certainly way better than looking up on a random website (Brian's site got mine very wrong), or asking a dealer to look it up. Check out this thread:

Decoding VIN codes for the first time can feel like learning a whole new language, especially when you’re trying to figure out what all those letters and numbers actually mean. I went through that myself when I first started looking into older vehicles and wanted to understand exactly what options were on mine versus what was just assumed. One tool that helped make sense of it was doing a toyota window sticker lookup through https://carfast.express/en/window_sticker/toyota because seeing the original factory build details gave real context to what the VIN was telling me. Once you see how it all connects, reading those codes becomes way more useful, especially when it comes to ordering parts, checking compatibility, or just satisfying your curiosity about how the car was built.
