Question about Prerunners

This is prob. a dumb question but Im in the market for a tacoma.
What is the difference between a 'prerunner' and a tacoma?
If theres any difference at all?
Is one better than the other??
I wanting to purchase this 2002 prerunner xtra cab off craigslist.
Do these models have any recalls? any issues i need to worry about?

Prerunners are 2wd Tacomas. They have the same body and everything else, minus the transfer case, front driveshaft, differential and other related components. You CAN convert a Prerunner to a 4wd quite easily because the body and frames are the same, as is the suspension, but why do that when you can by a 4wd Tacoma
you shouldnt have to worry about any recalls. '95.5-2000 were the years with the frame rust recall.
I wouldnt say one is better than the other, they are essentially the same exact vehicle, just one doesn't have 4wd. the Prerunner will get better mpg.

^ There's this guy in my city who wants to trade his 2002 toyota prerunner xtra cab 140k, auto, i think its a v6.
For my 2000 toyota 4runner sr5, auto, 2wd, leather. 135k

Do you guys think this is an even trade?
I really want a tacoma, and Im growing tired of my 4runner.

If you don't want the 4runner anymore then do it! It sounds pretty fair to me. Both under 150K miles, both 2wd. both autos, Your's does have leather, but thats just a luxury. Your 4runner is probably worth a little more, but to me, its pretty fair.

FWIW, Tacoma's have always held their value better than 4Runners. Perhaps there is more of a demand from small business owners and whatnot, but it's crazy how well they've held their value.

As far as the trade, if you need a truck, then do it. If you're happy with your ride, why risk getting someone else's truck where you don't know how it's been taken care of?

Well the T-belt and water pump would be a wash. The 2.7 uses a chain and the water pumps seem to last much longer than on a V6, so if you traded you wouldn't have to do that service. Being that the Tacoma is a 2.7, yet 2 years newer I'd say your values are very close. If it were me I would definitely keep the 4Runner, but I have owned several of each and just like the 4Runner better. If you really need a truck that would be the only reason I would even consider the trade. Lastly the 2wd V6 Runner even w/ the auto is probably fairly peppy, while the pre runner would not be terrible w/ the 2.7 and auto it definitely will be slower than you Runner in merging and passing scenarios. Not that you buy either for speed, just one more consideration.
