Is this poor mile performance?

My T4R is a '98 with a K&N Filter and 265/75/16 Tires. No other Modifications. According to the posts in the forum almost all the members get an an average of 17/20 mpg. Mine gets -always- 9/16 wich seems very low.

I always use the correct amount of tire pressure, never use cargo or heavy foot. The injectors where cleaned 10,000 miles ago, just installed new spark plugs and use 93 octane gasoline.

Do you guys think something is wrong?

Thanks,

JJ

first off get rid of the k&n filter and go back to stock. the oils that are used to recharge it seep into the intake.. i would deff have the intake cleaned (clean it yourself)

-what mileage on the vehicle?
-what plugs are used?
-quit using 93 octane and go with 87 octane from a major gas station like texaco or shell

what other repairs and or maintenance things have you had done or done yourself??

could be many things:
faulty O2 sensor
faulty fuel filter
what oil are you using in the vehicle and what rating... 10w30, 5w30, syn, etc

Are you correcting for the larger tire? you have an inch larger diameter tire than your odometer is calibrated for.

So, you are actually doing slightly better than that. 3% better.

Its not much, but its more accurate.

oil doesnt have much to do with that unless he is running like 20w50 or a super thick oil..

but the 02 and the fuel filters are biggies

The way you accelerate has alot to do with gas mileage too, I used to drive accelerating as quick as possible and got 14-15 mpg and now I'm driving like a grandma and accelerating slow and putting it into 4th or 5th gear when driving around town going about 30 miles per hour and I've been getting 20 mpg city/freeway mixture and I also have been running this STP gas cleaner I got from Walmart, 1 bottle cleans a tank of gas and its $2.97 for the pack of three...seems to be helpin a little bit especially with gas from cheaper gas stations...but mostly its just staying off the gas pedal as much as possible...

just keep in mind there is a reason that some fuel injector cleaners are $.99 ea and others are $29.99. I'm an avid fan of BG 44K

amen and GM top end cleaner. far better than seafoam. that stp sorry to tell you probably isnt doing much other than relieving you of $$.. it would better over all if you quit using cheap gas stations and start using brand named ones esp with the additives like texaco w/ techron and shell w/ v-power.. you will see a difference.. save the $ and use better fuel than buying that cheap stp junk

I wasn't attributing my 5mpg gain to the stp product lol I know its all because of my driving style change but for 99 cents a bottle even if you get .5 mpg increase you save money. And since using the STP stuff I havn't had pinging like I have sometimes. I normally don't use cheap gas stations unless I'm in the mountains and thats the only station around, and isnt it Chevron with Techron

First thought would be to skip 93 octane and go to 87. That will produce the biggest gain in dollars per mile. Perfectly smart to do so.

I'd guess your combined, in San Jose, is about 14, based on your range. That is low. The engine in the '99 is more fuel effecient than its predecessor the 3.0.

Could be its running rich. What shows up on the smog2 tests? Might be a clue there. I'd check the timing, and maybe try running with more advance, as an experiment.

You mentioned the "correct" air pressure. I found that running 40-42 psi improves the milage a few mpg's. You may get better tire wear also.

im afraid that the cheap injector cleaner stuff might actually do harm then good, possibly gumming up the injectors or soemthing else.

I used cheap gas, then i switched to chevron and my mpg went up a bit, about 2mpgs, from low 16 to 18mpg. Idk, could have been a one time thing, i don't think my driving changed.

Good point.. I assumed it was a 3.4, as the 2.7 rarely has problems with gas mileage... or so I think I've observed. And for that matter, the 3.4 has a better track record than the 3.0. (as you know)

So I assumed it was a 3.4L auto.

the cheap fuel injector cleaner actually damages the fuel injectors. there is some material in there that resists voltage, when that material is eaten away,(from use of cheap injector cleaner) you get a dead injector.

"tax a ho" also known as texaco bought chevron and yes all texaco gas stations should have techron in all grades of fuel. ditch the stp and start using quality fuel you will notice a long term difference.. i did... just an opinion man
