btw, I should add that I had a Discovery for a Rental last month while my 'Runner got some luv'n...what a POS!!! And I am not even kidding. I would not wish that truck on my worst enemy.

 

Before I bought my 4Runner, I test-drove a Disco. I agree, POS. It was SOO underpowered for a V8. Not only did it have no power, it got lousy mileage, too.

 

i dont know...at the discovery dealers test course a 4runner tried to tackle it and flipped at the angle attack part of the course.I think the land rover is unbelievable off-road but i dont wanna be the poor SOB that has to buy the parts to repair it. and for gas mileage she i a total:pig: ......im soooo happy with my new truck.

 

I had a Blazer before I got a 4Runner, I wouldn't even consider a Blazer or Explorer to be in the same class.

 

I voted 4Runner, but honestly... Hummer. H1. But for that price you could buy 4 4Runners so...

Late model...if you mean 3rd gen, and it could have the rear locker, I'd say 4Runner, otherwise, I'm sticking with landrover. Showroom stock, I'd love to believe the 4Runner is better offroad, but I doubt it. That's not to say you couldn't throw better tires and a couple low budget mods to make it as good, and still cost a LOT less.

yep.. new for new... I say the Land Rover, Much more capiable in stock form IHMO..

And for those talking about being under powerd ect.. The poll was for which is better off road.. and I still say the Disco has it hands down.. The 4Runner may HAVE been the best all around (I say HAVE because it is now no better than a Ford Escape IMHO..)

 

I've wheeled with my friend's 2000 disco' and it has awful ground clearance. He was getting stuck in the ruts of the snow when I wasn't even rubbing. So, I'll say 4runner.

Haha, I did try to abuse my two 4Runners for many years, but it did live up very well. These two have not fallen apart, yet. My 1998 4Runner is already over 142K miles with about 20 percent of mileage on 4wheeling. Also, I had my older '89 4Runner (1st gen.) for 265K miles and had been wheeling around the off road trail alot (about 70K miles) in the western part of U.S. It was running so strong before I sold for new '98 4Runner. That is why I am doing this again. Quit worry too much, Toyota is building the best toy for you and anyone to play out there. No wonder it is so popular in Australia and anywhere in the world where it needed to be there.

 

What? No Nissan Xterra? They're about on par with a stock 3rd Gen 4Runner.

Just My Slightly Biased Opinion It would be a hard decision for me to choose between the 4Runner and Xterra

Unfortunately No I wish it did. That would of solidified my decision in it even more Either way I don't do enough serious offroading to need a rear locker, so it's not a major thing to me. If I really want one I'll buy a detroit electric locker or an ARB Locker But mechanically wise, the Xterra and 3rd Gen 4Runner are almost identical. I can't remember the numbers offhand, but I think that the 3rd Gen 4Runners have a tiny bit more ground clearance, but I'm not positive. (Just pulled up an older post that Darren made about the ground clearances, and the 4Runner has a little under an inch more ground clearance at the rear diff. the Xterra has about a half-inch or an inch more clearance at the front diff (depending on what year 4Runner you look at) and the 4Runners have a little more clearance for the rocker panel. Either way both are awesome trucks! And if it weren't for how expensive the 4Runners are compared to the Xterra, I would of bought a 4Runner But I'm also a sucker for how the Xterra looks

I voted for 4Runner, but the most capable off road vehicle in my list is the 1994 thru 1997 Land Cruisers with the optional Front and Rear Locking differentials coupled with center locking differential and you can conquer any terrain. IMHO the LC is the most capable go anywhere all terrain vehicle. Not to mention if you installed that the Kazuma supercharger to increase HP to a whopping 300+ HP and a massive torque.

I'm afraid I think the Rover gets it for off-road. They're slugs, gas hogs, and money pits but they sure are capable on the trail. Strange that so few of them actually get on the trails. It might be the money pit issue.

I drove a Disco series 2 on an off-road course and they certainly excel at off-camber, no question. They have a very good feel on steep sidehills. I was able to defeat the abilities of the traction control once, but a tad more momentum and it climbed up with ease. Would I ever own one?....not in a million years.

I agree they are very stable..but the clearance was less than my old s10 truck that I thought was the lowest 4wd ever made!!
