Can O' Worms

This is pretty crazy guys, anyway, having worked with a guy last summer with a Disco at a 1000 acre summer camp and going on a lot of roadtrips with him, my vote was for my ride, the 4Runner. Discos look cool to me but that thing just plowed its way through everything, it just sits too low most the time. Once when going up a hillclimb of about 1500' it just lost traction and started sliding twords me. I did the nice thing, downshifted, let the brushgaurd meet up with his rear bumper and help him up the last 500'. I will never let him live that one down. Also, he paid about 7000K more fore a simeler vehicle, no bargin! BTW, early explorers and rengerg had the TTB or twin traction beam front suspension. It is in many ways superior to Toyota IFS. TTB will gain performance from a lift kit, it is stronger and much easier to modify. If I couldnt have my 4Runner, I would be shoping for an XTerra or Ranger, can't think of anything else.

Are we talking most capable in stock trim since with X amount of money any of those trucks has good off road capabilities.

In total stock trim of course my vote is for the 4Runner.

i wish ford would have kept that instead of going to a-arm ifs. TTB is superior to a-arms because it allows a lot of droop. however, there were a few weak points in the setup on most trucks, but for the most part it was relatively good. the guts were mostly interchangeable with solid axle parts, too. for example, an f150 with ttb(dana 44 ifs) could swap a lot of parts with other d44s, and the fronts used u-joints instead of cvs, iirc

I think this poll is missing some very important vehicles:

- LandCruiser with Locking Diff's
- Merecedes G-Wagen with 3x locking diffs
- European Touraeg with 3x locking diffs and V10 diesel (not much of a contender for heavy duty stuff due to fully independant suspension, but good in snow)
- Grand Cherokee Overland (Center Locking diff and limited slips front and rear, and solid axles all around)
- Jeep Rubicon with locking front and rear diffs, plus part time 4x4, plus 4:1 low range, plus solid axles, plus limited slip rear diff

My vote would deffinately be with either the land cruiser or the rubicon.

Voted for the 4-Runner tho.

Would it be any surprise to you if the 4Runner won this poll? This is the type of question to be asked on a Nissan forum but of course Nissan would win that poll. My vote, well you know.

I've yet to wheel with anything that held up better than the Runner offroad (stock for stock). BTW, range rover and land rover are about 20,000 dollars difference in price, not the same truck.

I had a 91 explorer and offroaded it occassionally. It did alright, not that impressive though. Horrible approach and departure angles, not to mention low ground clearance. I had fun though.

Without a doubt; Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Seems to be missing from the list....

There don't seem to be any Jeeps on the list.

I'm a bit late to reply on this, but the Land Rover will have to get my vote when it comes to bone stock wheelin.

Other than that, the 4Runner isn't far behind, and much better in every other category

I had to vote for the land rover, but the four runer is by far the second, the two vehicvles, ar eby far the best engineered creations to date, some idiot tried to tell me today that he would rather race the baja 500 with a chevy than a toyota! i completely shut him down!!!!!

Right now for the money I think the Jeep Rubicon is the best out of the box 4x4, especially for the money. It has a short wheel base and comes with front and rear lockers. All it needsi is a little lift and larger tires and that is it to go anywhere the owner wants.

Then I think the Mercedes product are going to be second if you can afford them. The G-Wagon comes with front, center, and rear lockers and is very strongly built. Then of course is the UNIMOG.

I really love my 4Runner off road, but I had to put a lot of money into it so that I could do what I wanted to with it. Mine is a third gen, but It seems to me that the current 4Runner would be less capable off road.
