I have a 1997 Taco with 222k miles on it. The reverse lights quit working recently. I checked the fuses and they're ok. It's a 5 speed manual. I found a switch on the passenger side of the trans and checked it with a continuity tester with the key on and the shifter in reverse. There was no electricity to either wire. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a problem with my back-up lights not working also. I haven't climbed under to check it out yet.

Not so sound like an a$$ but, i assume that when you are checking for voltage you have the key turned on?

In my case, I'm guessing that the trans switch is bad. It started to be intermittent. I could jiggle the shifter and it would flash on/off.

After clicking on the "tags" and "reverse" below I got some trouble shooting ideas.
Pull the wires off the switch, insert a wire connecting the two wires together, start the vehicle (it can be in neutral now) and look at your lights. This eliminates the switch. If they light then it's a bad switch OR what ever pushes on the switch inside isn't touching it any more. Next step is to pull the switch out and check continuity with a meter.

 

It's most likely the switch itself- I have been told they fail pretty frequently. Use a discount place like Toyota Parts Zone to verify a fitment against your VIN number.

 

Check your Back-Up Lamp Relay and see if you have power there.
