newbie Needs your Help Please

hi i am new to the forum and i just bought a 94 toyota pickup. it has the 22 re engine in it and its automatic. I have a few concerns i hope u can help me with.
#1- When im driving there is a noise in the engine that kinda sounds like a chain winding up or somethin, its metally(hard to explain sorry)... so when i left off the gas this noise continues kinda like the chain is now winding down or somethin? is this normal?
#2- I have to give the truck gas sometimes to get it to start..otherwise it wont seem to crank over, this only happens occasionally like 1 out 5 times or so... it seems to happen when the whether is hot and not cold?
#3- The truck has 105k miles on it, i checked tha air filter it is brand new, and i just got an oil change with 10w30..... What other kind of maintenance should i do? from reading it seems like i should change the plugs, wires, rotor and distributor.. along with a tranny flush and replace fluid, any other things i should do?

Any Help is Greatly Appreciated - Thank You , Steve

Welcome to Yotatech.

I would investigate the timing chain. The chain sound and the extra gas to start are a sign of a timing chain chumped a tooth and a possible problem with the tensioner.

Also take the opprotunity to search the forum.

Welcome to Yotatech.

I dont knwo about your 1 and 2 questions, but for the maintenance stuff, I would have everything done, plugs , wires , tanny fluid, coolent... just do it all so then you will know that its all good and stuff. Who knows, maybe when you do all of that, your problems with go away.

From: Cali... I think... I don't know anymore!
Welcome to Yotatech
I would think timing Chain.
I had an 85 tuck with the 22RE and i had that same sound. I was told it was the timing chain so put a new one on and no more sound.... But after I replaced the timing chain I had Timing problems. After asking a few dealers and yota freaks around my area, I was told that the 22RE had (I know this sounds weard) several different makers of the timing chain gears and chain. I took my VIN number into the dealer and they got me the "right one" for my motor. After replacing the timing chain again It ran fine. I don't know if what i was told was true but my truck did not have timing problems after I put the second chain on.
I would like to know if anyone had the same thing told to them.
Hope you enjoy your new truck.... a lot of good mod ideas on here.

Steve,
I would recomend getting the new timming chain and guides from here
enginebuilder.com
or here
DOA Racing
or here
LCE Engineering

make sure you get the kit with the metal chain guides, they will not wear out like the plastic Toyota OEM guides.
And make sure you get it done before the chain breaks thru the timming cover into the water pump, bad mojo there.

Also you might want to check for a bad cold start injector for you starting issue.
Hope that helps and enjoy your truck

I 2nd that, I just replaced the front cover, chain and head gasket (and put a .270 /.430 cam in) on my neighbors 22RE. After coolant had gotten in the oil

Try to catch it before that happens. When you take off the front cover look at it closely on the drivers side edge where the chain has come into contact with the case. I'm sure it's worn.

Oh, and I got everything from engnbldr.com. Talk to Todd, he'll help you out.

thank you again guys for the help! I guess i will be looking into buy that timing chain kit asap, since it seems like that winding sound in the engine could pretty much only be the chain... i do have 105 k miles and i dont know the maintenance history, so im sure it needs to be done... how much should i be looking at labor cost for someone to put this in? also at 105k should i do a tranny flush, fuel filter, and spark plug/wires? anything else to do? thanks alot - steve

I'd go ahead and do your 02 sensor too...I did mine and it made my truck run much better, that is of course if you haven't already had that done ~80k like it should have been done.

Just a thought!

Does the sound come and go (there for a while and goes away) or is it constant with rpm's.

Also is the sound like metal on metal (think of a bike chain on the chain guard sound). That is timming chain sound. Like running stick on a chain link fence.

Or is the sound more of a whoooooooo (a high speed fan sound).

If it is the latter, then it is the cooling fan that runs off of a clutch that engages when the temp of the air running accross the fan get high enough to expand the silicone fluid in the clutch. The clutch can be rebuilt by changing the fluid inside (if it is not locked up). The fluid is available at the Toy dealer. You can also swap out the mechanical clutch fan for a 2 speed electric fan out of Ford Taurus (not the 3.0 L engine, I think it is the 3.6 L). Do a search on here if you want to explore that option, lot's of good write ups.

Hope that helps.

My truck makes a sound very similar to a chain winding up, mainly when decelerating or decending a hill. I have found out that it is just the muffler, but even if it is only the muffler, you should definitely have your timing chain guides checked anyway.

You should not have to give a fuel injected vehicle any gas when you start it up because the computer takes care of the mixture. Try cleaning the throttle body. It may have a lot of build up that is keeping the air from getting in (if it has a lot of build up then it would be sort of acting as a choke). The ignition timing will also make a difference in how a vehicle starts, so have that adjusted.

yea the sound is like a bike chain and exactly what u said, decelerating or going down a hill.... the muffler is all rusted too so that could definitely be it..... as far as idling/starting up i will check the throttle body to see how dirty it is and i prob do need ignition timing corrected as welll. i found out the spark plugs were dirty as ˟˟˟˟ so im getting new ones along with plug wires, dist cap and rotor... i will also be changing the fuel filter. i will have everything done this weekend so after that i will see if the truck seems to run alot better which i hope it should. thanks for the continuing help guys - steve
