Need some help with engine.

My engine is running rough, chug chug chug chug (kind of like how a Harley idles). When I get on the gas it runs smooth, no miss. I have done a complete tune up, tps adjustment, etc.. at idle it is running rough, and I am getting bad gas milage. I want to do a compression test, but have never done one before. Can someone give me some instructions on how to do one? I have a compression tester from a friend. Just need a little step by step. I had a problem about 6 months ago with the #2 plug being fouled out (but it looked like it was from running to rich.

Remove your coil wire.
Remove the spark plug from the cylinder you want to test.
Screw the compression tester into the cylinder or if you have the hand-held model, hold it firmly against the spark plug hole.
Have your wife crank the engine over.

Repeat for the other 5 cylinders.

I forgot to mention that there is usually a tire type valve at the tip of the tester to release the pressure from the guage and reset it to zero. You must do this between cylinders.

I aslo helps if the engine is warm and you should hold the throttle body wide open.
If you find a cylinder with low compression pour in 1 oz. of oil and retest. If the compression goes up it's rings. If compression does not go up it's valves.
