My truck is in need of some work:

It's a '91 4x4 Pickup with K&N Kit, Downey Headers, ~3-4" Lift (not body). Double rancho 5000s in the front, singles in the rear and alot of minor problems:

Here's a list of symptoms/needs and costs from one mechanic:

Compression check: 1/200 2/200 3/195 4/195 5/195 6/190
Block Check: OK
Steering Idler Arm Replacement: $230
R/S wheel bearing loose $45
Lower ball joints: $245
Front Shocks loose: $50
R/S Inner Axle boot replacement: $175
Rear Differential Gasket leak: $145
Gear oil on R/S rear brakes $210
Transfer case leak:?
Exhaust loose: $120
Front Brake Pulsation: $365

Any Advice would be greatly appreciated. If anyone can tell me what of this I might be able to do myself and what a good order for doing it would be then that would make my day.

It's a rattle box. The double shocks in the front make for a very bumpy ride. In 4x4 it makes some scary noises in the front, uh-oh.

Your compression is fine. Motor good. Everything is easily driveway doable. If you got the tools go for it. Its all pretty simple stuff just have to get dirty.

 

if you are asking us what you can do, you might just want to pay someone to do it

easiest stuff on there i would think are exhaust and diff leak.




o ya, you can tighten shocks....

none of that is too difficult..... but if you dont know what your doing man... just pay someone...

 

Advice??? Buy a haynes repair manual. It has everything in there in pretty good detail..

I'd like to see what a 3" lifted truck looks like with 31" tires.

$50 for a loose shock, $120 for loose exhaust, and $45 for loose wheel bearing!!! WTF?!?!?!

Compression is ok and I bet most of that other stuff doesn't need to be replaced. You need to report this guy to the BBB immediately.

 

Oh yeah, you need to learn to work on your truck!! Its easy. Then you won't drive for 6 month with a noisy front end because of a loose shock that takes 1 minute to tighten.

BTW, who quoted you on that service? If you really wanna get it done locally, try calling Superior on De La Vina and talk to George/Jorge. Lets look at it first though.

...I actually do know how to work on my truck, I have a couple manuals. I've been working 60 hours a week lately and I don't have all the tools that I think most of these repairs require. I also don't have a good place to work on it. I installed the headers all by myself, the exhaust system too (that's why it needs work ).

I'm more concerned with the prices and the order in which these things need to get fixed.

But I understand all your concerns and suggestions. Thanks for spending the time to give them to me!

Hey!

Those prices do seem kinda high. You can rebuild an idler arm for less than $20 from what I hear. I just went and bought new front driver's side bearings, seals, and a few other stuff for less than $80 from the dealer. Doesn't look too complicated to do. You can get some rotors and pads from a parts supply store for around $80 and do that yourself too.

Most of the prices seem ok.. Depending on the parts used.
Idler arm can be done a lot cheaper
Wheel bearing mostlikely can just be re-packed and tightened up (they are $$ new though)
Axle shaft is about $99 new.. Don't change boots, it is not worth it
Exhaust is a 2 bolt swap and about $113 new from toyota from the Cat - back

The rest seem fair as long as they are quoted with labor included..

I would do as many as possiable yourself, there is a lot of easy things there..
