I know this is a dumb question but I was thinking about getting a tool kit for my '91 runner and can't figure out which to get. Please enlighten a troubled mind.

Almost every bolt is one of these sizes 8,10,12,14,17,or 19mm.

 

don't forget the rear diff, tranny, and t-case filler and drains are 24mm, and the front diff fill is 12mm hex and the drain is 10mm hex (allen keys) or vice versa, I can't remember but you need these two sizes for the front diff.

 

Ditto. Don't forget the lug nuts so you can use that new torque wrench, too!

 

The front and rear drain plugs on the 91-95's are not hex keys. At least on my 93 they are 24mm or 22mm, or something like that. I think they went to hex keys in 96.

 

I didn't know he was talking about a 2nd gen, I thought he was talking 3rd gen. but I also didn't know that little tidbit so thanks.

 

Its all metric. Make sure you get all sizes going from 8 to 24mm. You'll need em if you do a lot of your own work. And if you really get into it you might need a 27mm and under 8mm, but not too likely. I'm not sure about allen wrenches, but I don't have any on my '89. Get em in wrenches and sockets, with all ratchet sizes, extensions, u-joints, ect... But if you don't do a lot of work, just get a basic kit in metric. Sears has alot of different size kits.

I screwed up, cause I had a chevy malibu that was half metric/half standard and a my buddy's mustang 5.0 is all metric.

 

I screwed up and bought a Craftsman Mechanic set that had both standard and metric and then had to fill in the blanks with the sizes that didn't come with it. I should have just gotten all metric but like you I was in college driving a '91 chevy cavalier and needed both. now I have a bunch of basically useless standard tools.

 

So 3rd gens are Metric also? I always thought Japanese vehicles were all SAE.

you can substitute SAE tools for metric sizes if you have to, here are a few that fit pretty good: 5/16=8mm, 1/2=13mm, 9/16=14mm, 11/16=17mm, 3/4=19mm, 13/16=21mm, 15/16=24mm, there may be a few more but i cant think of them right now

 

the only bolts I've run into on my truck that were not Metric were the body mounts bolts.
