I've been toying with the idea of swapping up to something newer with lower miles & found a 97 sr5 with 80k, 4wd, 4cyl and 5spd. I know the 3rd gen's are heavier, but with the added power of the 2.7l overall performance should be a little better than my 22re, right?

Just looking for any specific things to check out when I look at it later today, carfax is clean, 1 owner. I think for 10k it's a good deal. here's a few pics.

well it looks like a good vehicle but isnt hte 2.7 liter the same as a 4cylinder? and thats what you have in your truck now. where you will notice the difference is in the power, but just because its newer. also you will notice a huge ride difference and braking difference. all better than the previous 4runners but rightfully so.

 

Yeah, still a 4cyl (which I prefer) but my searching indicates the 2.7l puts out 150hp compared to 118 for my 22re, most say the newer 4cyl is roughly the same power as the 3slow.

 

4 banger 3rd gens are still slow and you might only a notice a small diff from your current truck. Pay the extra for the 6 and 183hp;I've driven both and the v6 is worth it.

 

For me the 4cyl is perfect, I put really low miles on my vehicles, mostly city with the occasional trip back east or to dallas. The only time I wished my current truck had more hp was when towing my boat on hills, and even then it was a just painful minute or two... for 31 I drive like an old man.

Anyway, anyone have things to checkout or look for? I'm not aware of any issues like the headgasket recall that need to be checked out & carfax comes up clean...

yep and yep. Just got home with it from Oklahoma City, much smoother, more power, better ride and handling. I miss the e-brake in the dash, and the shorter throws with the transmission make it feel a little less truck like, but over all it's so much nicer.
