It's been a while since I posted anything on Yotatech, I usually just search and eventually find what I am looking for. I have a situation where I need to get my wheels balanced and rotated but Its impossible to get the wheel off because I have lost the key (I always kept it with my spare tools under the rear seat but I have no Idea how it has been misplaced). I have searched on the topic and have exhausted myself in trying to removing the darn thing.

Pipe around the lug nut is impossible as there is hardly any space to fit around
the perimeter of the lug nut.

I took it to Kauffman Tire, Discount Tire, and Tire Depot to no avail (they were as dumbfounded as I when they saw how little clearance there is around the nut)

I was thinkin of JB welding a nut on top of it and into the grooves so that I could twist it off but I doubt JB weld will hold up.

I am out of ideas short of ACTUALLY welding another nut on top of these to get to my wheel.

So I come to you guys with a picture and a prayer that someone has a solution that doesnt involve potentially destroying the wheel.



Looking at the picture that closely it looks like I COULD actually get something around there, but believe me its not that easy.

As a side note, if ANYONE has a key like this that I could borrow I would pay for everything.

 

like you said, I doubt JB would hold up to the torque required to get it off.

I did the same thing on my wife's camry, I pounds a slightly smaller socket on to the locking lock. It took some finessing to get off but it worked as due to the design of the lug I used it wasn't torque on as tight as a regular lug.

if that doesn't work I think the welding a nut on the end is the way to go..

check every where though--center console, glove box, cubbies in the back, under the back seat..i am sure you did but it sucks finding stuff a month later (been there a few times )

 

Check with Sears. When I bought my 4Runner, there was no key, and the wheels have a deep setback like yours. I think they actually split them off with a chisel, and it was like $3 per lug.

Have you tried thin-wall impact sockets? Maybe there enough room for them.

 

That's not a factory lug nut is it?

I lost my key a while ago and I just went to the dealer and bought a new one for $14. The Toyota ones have about twelve different keys to choose from.
If you know who makes yours, them give them a call and see what they suggest.

 

I'd try drilling out the center and using an extracor

I have helped do this at Sears auto. The extractor with an air gun (you could use a drill) is what we used and we demolished the lug in about 15 min. We were very careful not to ruin the rim. I don't believe in these locking lugs. I think that people more often loose the key than get the rims stolen. I think we ended up replacing the stud also after we were done. I can't remember exactly because it was several years ago. But I definitely remember the extractor.

 

get a thin walled 12pt. socket and hammer it on there. it's easier than actually using the key. throw away the locking lug, it does nothing to deter someone who really wants your wheels.

 

Try the flea market. I've seen people selling a bunch of those keys. Try looking for one that matches up with your pattern.

Not a toyota wheel lock, otherwise the dealership usually removes them for cheap/free if you buy another set.

 

Wheel locks are only good for getting you in situations such as this. Get it off and then throw the damn things away.

 

I am going to head to Sears tomorrow and get a nice sized socket to hammer onto the lugnut lock and see if I have any luck. While im there i'll see if they can take it off for me.

Check with your yota dealer. That's where I had mine REMOVED.
