Lockers
I have been looking into lockers, and would like to get some input on what others are using. I have a 2nd gen 4-runner.(1993) I have been considering the Detriot EZ-Locker, but am open to input. Thanks in advance. Brian

The Lock-Rite is a pretty good inexpensive alternative. It's fairly easy to install but it's not a great choice if your running 35" or larger tires, or a big motor.
I had to toss mine trying to run them with 37" tires.

I have the Detroit EZ Locker...I am quite satisfied with it. Great bang for the buck...but it does BANG. Its a full time locker, so when you turn, your tires will sqeal or it will make a clicking noise. I kinda like it, people always stare like somethings wrong with my 4Runner. Anyway, Ill be putting one in the front too...DETROIT 313 represent...LOL

I dont know anything about the lockright, but if its a full-time locker...it will do the same. When I had my old BFG MTs, they chirpped when I turned. But with my goodyear MTRs, they grip so well that the locker bangs

I recently installed a Detroit Soft Locker. It is a newer design, and I love it. On the road I can feel it once in a while, but it makes no noise.
Off road it is impressive. Hills that I would have had trouble going up are a cake walk.
It replaces the stock carrier so it is the strongest alternative. My buddy who is a Ford mechanic installed it in just a couple hours. I also replaced all the bearings at the same time.

turns are a little tricky. If you let off on the gas and coast around the turn the detroit will unlock and let the inside tire spin freely. If you stay on the gas--especially in a merge situation the inside tire will chirp every time.
I am pretty good about not chirping it. I just stay on the gas lightly and it works fine.

I wouldn't recommend a full time locker in the front. I'd go with a selectable locker. ie electric or ARB.
You lose a lot of steering control with a full locker. When I turn on my ARB it's tough to even turn the wheels!

I only did the rear. I still have the auto locking front hubs, and lockers, unless selectable do not work.
I bought the locker for $405.00 Master install kit $125.00 and my buddy installed it for $100.00
By far the best mod I could do for my runner

Has anyone installed a Lockright in the front axle of a 1998 or one with the same axle? If so, how does it drive when in 4wd and 2wd? How's the steering effected when in 4wd and 2wd? Any problems? Is the install as easy as the rear sounds like it is?
