I get anywhere between 180 and 220 miles from a tank of feul. Are there larger tanks available? I'd like to take a back roads adventure and would like to have more backup.

 

First, welcome to YotaTech

There are several ways you can go,

You can replace the stock tank with something larger. This will require some research and fabbing.

You can add an additional tank/cell in the bed.

You can add an additional tank under the bed.

I went with the Downey tank because it was direct bolt up, required no fabbing and was emissions legal. 15.5 additional gallons, transferred to the main tank with an electric fuel pump.

If you have inspections in your area, keep an eye on whether the solution you choose will get by them.

As Rob said, welcome to the forum. I'm curious how you're scraping by with 180-220? Is that with a full tank and estimating to empty? I don't know about the rest of the guys but I've been able to get between 250-300 on my '02. I'm curious to know if you have any mods that are affecting your mileage?

 

Thanks for the welcome! No mods - just a lot of city driving and a heavy foot. I think the best I ever got was about 260 on a run down to SF. I reset the odometer pretty much every time I fill up. The auto tranny doesn't help any I guess. Is your a 4 door? That probably adds some weight as well.

Well seeming as how gasoline weighs about 6 pounds a gallon. The gasoline would be about a 100 pounds worth. I dont know if thats a steel tank for sure but it prolly weighs....20-30 pounds??? Im just guessing on the last part.

 

The silver cylinder forward of the fuel tank is a 2.5 gallon air tank for my onboard air system. It's mounted cross-wise across the bed, just in front of the Downey.

 

Yes, it's designed to fit a stock truck. It even has a system to allow you to continue to use the stock tire hoist, if you choose to put the spare back under the tank.

Suspension wise, the tank is is likely around 30 lbs, plus the weight of 15 gallons of gas, so I would guess the whole thing is about 150 lbs or so when the tank is full. I suspect you will get some sag out of that, but nothing that a minimal lift AAL won't fix.

 

I've got a doublecab auto... but then again I do so much freeway driving that I just turn my cruise control to 65.

When I hit out only on local streets I usually get 60-70 miles per 1/4 tank.

 

I have one of the old gravity fed aux. fuel tanks like downey's.

The negative thing is the amount of dirt and crud that gets caught around the fuel intlet.

Positivies include heavier rear end in snow and ice, 600 mile driving range, filling when gas is cheaper, and not having to worry about not having enough gas to go in the woods.

If you can afford the nearly 500 USD I'd suggest you buy one. You won't regret it.
