Well, I'm putting an MP3 changer in my 98 4Runner. It will be FM Modulated, which means the power antenna will go up anytime the radio is on. A buddy of mine had a 98 Landcruiser that had an OEM power antenna switch in it. I am going to buy the switch, and put it in my 4Runner. Has anyone had any experience with this switch? Will it work? Either way, I'll take pictures, and let you guys know how it goes.

 

I would like to know about this also. When I put an after market radio in my runner the antanae stays up all the time. With the Toyota radio the ant. stayed down when the CD played which is most of the time.

 

Contact Jason Butman. He wired up a button in his truck so he can control the anetenna's position independant of the radio.

I'm using the regular Toyota fog lights switch to control power antenna since I have aftermarket stereo installed. The fog lights switch fits perfectly and looks 100% OEM

As far as connections, that's probably the simplest mod I've ever done. Just connect the blue wire from the stereo to the switch and another blue wire to the Toyota antenna wire (also blue). That's all and it works like a charm!

Never mind. I figured it out. I have a Blaupunkt and I just clipped the two blue antenna wires between the wiring harness and wired in a toggle switch! Sweet!!! Thanks.

 

Got the part, and got the pictures posted. Why might you ask? Because I don't have a freaking clue! 6 little tabs to connect, but what each tab is....clueless. I think the 4th one (starting left to right) is the ground. Any ideas?

 

Ok, assuming left to right is 1-6.

When Up is pressed:
1-2 Open
1-3 Open
1-4 Open
1-5 Open
1-6 Shorts
2-3 Shorts
4-5 Shorts

When Down is pressed:
1-6 Shorts
2-5 Shorts
3-4 Shorts

Nothing Pressed
1-6 Shorts

Ok all you electricians, What does it all mean?

 

Does this switch have lights in it? That may be why some of the contacts always show a "short". Can the square center parts of the switch that say up/down be rotated 90 deg, so the switch can be mounted vetically?

 

Yep, the switch has lights. Both buttons illuminate with the dash and stereo, etc.... when you have the lights on. I'm not sure about turning the buttons. Not something I want to risk at the moment. Based o the shape though, I'd have to say no. Where the two buttons meet in the middle, it is shaped slightly different than the rest of the sqare.

 

Put the switch in. Pulled all my hair out.

Leads:

Lead 1. Positive 12v for the lights
Lead 2. For the down button
Lead 3. For the down button
Lead 4. For the up button
Lead 5. For the up button
Lead 6. Ground for the lights.

Now, I hooked it all up, and turned the radio on. Antenna goes up as it should. I push and hold the down button, and the antenna goes down like it should. Soon as I release the down button, the antenna goes back up. So now I'm frustrated. To start off, I cut the wrong wire. Cut some small antenna wire (the small one next to the big one inside the dash that comes out the back of the stereo). So I can't put it back together cuz it's coaxial or some thing...wire inside of a wire. So I finally find the antenna wire coming out of the amp that the toyota factory stereo comes with, it was a black wire with a white stripe on it, coming out of the amp.

So if I just used a simple toggle switch, I'd be done. Run one end of the antenna wire into the toggle, then out back to the other part of the wire. But with the fancy toyota switch I "had" to have, it isn't that simple. I can get the antenna to go up and down, just can't get it to stay down unless I turn the radio off, or use the tape or CD player. The important thing is...I got the lights to work.

 

I have a 97 LX 450 with what looks like the same switch. The way it works is you set the antenna height with the switch and it remembers that height. For example, I don't want the antenna hitting the garage door when parking so I set it down a few inches from full up. Turn the key off and the antenna goes down, on and it goes up to where you last set it. IMO there is some sort of ECU that controls the thing.

Well that sucks for me. I'm thinking I wasted my money on this. I should have gotten a foglight switch for this project instead.

 

Did the project with the foglight switch, and rubbed off the foglight sign on the switch. Man, talk about much easier. Stupid Landcruiser switch! lol.
