I searched and found very minimal results on this topic. I pulled my interior carpet and would like to dye the carpet to a new color. I'm looking for any instructions/advice/brands to use/ and things to look out for. I figure if this doesn't work I'll try buying some carpet at Lowes and custom fit it into my cab.

Just a thought... Aftermarket pre-molded carpets can be had for around $100 (online vendors; eBay). Unless you're super-strapped for $$$$$, wouldn't it be just as cost-effective (including your time and hassle) to just swap out for a new one?...

 

I've got to agree with getting new carpet. It's not that expensive and they dyes don't work very well for a color change. Most of the ones I've seen are like a spray on dye and it takes a long time to dry. I had a buddy redye his 1974 Corvette carpet that way - but it was a same color dye job in black. For weeks he had black dye coming off on his shoes but it finally did dry out and looked good.

 

Yep, I put a brand new factory color MOLDED carpet complete with repro original heel pads in my 71 Cougar convertible for 100 bucks. Pretty hard to beat that.

 

RIT available at Walmart for $1.50/pack

Mix it up in a spray bottle and go to town. Messy.

If you are going a darker color, no worries.

If you are going a lighter color, use the RIT decolorer first.

I dyed my gray carpet black, took two applications, but it looks good so far. First application, 1 packet to 16 oz HOT water in the spray bottle, soak the carpet, let it dry in the sun and cure for a day or two. Then rinse the crap out of it with the hose. Let it dry a day or two. Second application just like the first. Count on using about $20-40 worth of RIT, just depending on where you buy it and how dark you want to go.

You can also throw the carpet (one section at a time) and the RIT Die in the washe machine. Just like the directions. Works great. (if you have a farely large machine) Make sure you wash and bleach out the machine afterwords. Good luck.

I figured I'd try the dye first, then if I'm unhappy with the results I'd breakdown and buy the carpet. Thanks waskillywabbit for the info. I purchased the liquid RIT dye from the recommendations of a WallyWorld employee and someone in the isle. $7 later I'll see how it turns out.

Seems like the liquid was more expensive, thus the reason I got the powder and the powder was more readily available. I'm going to finish mine today.

NOTE: Don't put the carpet w/ padding in the washing machine...you'll be sorry and 4 out of the 5 pieces, 2 of the big pieces, and the 2 small pieces all have padding. I tried the small pieces in the washing machine, made a mess of the padding, still there, just a lot less, and it made a mess of my wife's washing machine...
