I don't seem to have a fuel filter,,,,

This discussion was adressed in another thread and was never resolved, but the old thread had gotten long and tedious to read. Anyway I have a 1981 SR5 5 Speed equipped with the 22R and the fuel pump right on the front of the head and run by the camshaft. I am told the fuel filter should be on one of the crossmembers near the tank, but unless it is a truly tiny (meaning not much bigger in diameter than the fuel line) there simply is nothing resembling a fuel filter along any of the lines from the tank. I can barely get my hand on those lines as it is, and if there was a filter there I simply cannot find it.

What I am asking is if someone has an old 81 2WD Toyota pickup, do they know where their fuel filter was? Is there any possibility they put it inside the tank? Also how big is the filter? Thanks in advance

More of a bump, but this is what my 22r filter looked like.

I am pretty sure they kept these things the same for most year trucks.

I can say most definately there is no filter like that anywhere on or near the lines from the tank.

Your fuel filter is in the engine bay, passenger side. Yes, for sure.

For an RE it is, for an R it is on top of the passenger side frame rail at the front edge of the gas tank, right behind the cab. All of them I've ever messed with have been there but then my experience goes back as far as '83 models. Is it different before then?

If you are right those bastards who fixed it for the last owner junked the damn thing then and went with no filter when they changed the fuel pump.

You are getting this knowlege from having had an 81 right?

Nevermind the pic, I found it and I am so pleased I will not have to get gas and dirt in my eye playing around under the truck where my hands don't want to fit.

Let me tell you, that old filter was gunked! I am now able to cruise at 70 and feels like it has more to give where originally I could barely make 60.

I guess it doesn't matter, glad to hear you found it, and it's running better.

Rock on!

One thing disturbs ne. The filter cost over 6 bucks. Are all Toyota oarts nasty expensive? This is my first forein vehicle. My old Chevys fuel filter, which was metal and better made was only about $2.
