Hub Rebuild - How difficult?

Hub Rebuild - How difficult?

I'm thinking around the time I put my lift wheels and Bilstiens on that I should rebuild the hubs. After reading, I think it was adam's site, about having to turn the hubs with pliers I now know they are in need of a rebuild. How difficult is it to rebuild the hubs? Also, where should I go when looking for replacement parts. I already know there is a bolt missing on both hubs, owner before me didn't take care of this truck at all. So I'm assuming the worse when I take them off.

Btw, when I did a search I saw one of the old threads on hubs, man did I know nothing about these trucks .

rebuilding the hubs is a pretty simple deal. There is an article on 4x4wire about it. While they are tore down you can find new bolts too.
My hubs were full of silicone (on the inside).... it seems that its easier to use silicone to seal them up, than to oh.. I dont know, go to a toyota dealership and pay 15 bucks for a whole new gasket kit. You can do it.... no problem!

cool, I was looking at the rebuilds on 4x4wire and other sites, it didn't seem too dificult. I was just curious, cause I know those things are expensive. I'll probably drop by the stealership and get a gasket kit and see about getting a new set of bolts while I'm in the buying-alota-stuff-for-the-truck mood.

Talking toyoata factory aisin manual hubs

this is toyota parts dude i sell toyota parts over ebay i have used set of aisin hubs for a 86-95 toyota truck listed rite now that ends on sunday. they are in good shape they worked perfect when pulled from truck they are a little weathered looking. i have other sets of them if you can't buy them from ebay. it'll save you alot of money over going to dealer.

Those little bolts are easy to break. The torque spec is 5.8 to 8.7 ft/lbs according to the crappy Haynes manual. If you go any over that the head will twist off and it will be easy out time. They must be made from the weakest metal in the world.

I skipped the gaskets and used black RTV to seal them as it was a trail fix the first time I went in there. Toyota can take their $15 gaskets and shove them. Its their way of recooping the losses on all those head gasket fixes and free motors they had to give out. 2 cents worth of RTV works just as well.

I would rather rebuild instead of buy new. No sense in spending more money than I should.

jx94148: Thanks for the tip on the torque spec. I will still need to buy two of the bolts to replace it. I might try the RTV seal also.

Look in this thread for some links and other info. I found it was really simple to tear these down. The only special tool you need is snap ring pliers.

In that other thread Cebby linked someone says they got the gaskets for $1.28 each. Someone here says there is a "kit" for $15. I didn't have a choice since I had to do this at 10:00 on a Saturday night 100 miles from the nearest dealer. If they are in fact $1.28 each I might pay that much.

When I rebuilt my Aisins, I paid $15.00 for the gaskets and new rubber "o" rings... I didnt think that was TOO terrible, concidering I was told @ NAPA and Checker that the only place to get them was through toyota........ certainly could have been worse.
