How often should a O2 sensor be replaced??

I have 159,000 miles on a 22re.I recently made modifications to the intake and exhaust. After final tuning it now passes emmisions but I occasionally get a check engine light.
Is this an TPS adjustment/tuning issue or does the O2 sensor need replacing?
I now have 2 year tags so Im not as concerned with it passing emmisions.Should I have it re-tuned for better performance?
Thoughts,encouraging words and ideas welcome.

Can you get the CE code? In my experience when an o2 sensor goes bad, that's it. For me it was not an intermittent thing, so I'd try tuning first.

I agree. I don't recall hearing about O2 sensors being intermittent. And I've only replaced one that went bad in all my Toyota miles (over 600,000).

I have had an O2 sensor give intermittent CE light. My BMW barely passed emissions last year (High HC). Soon after, the CE light came on. I went about my business for the day, the next day I went out to get the code and the light wouldn't come on. A few days later it came on again, this time I pulled the code immediately and it was the O2 sensor out of range. Replaced the sensor and the light has never came on again. I also took it back to the emissions station for another test ($15 for a exhaust gas analysis is cheap) and the HC level was at the bottom of the range again.

For a brief time right before it really goes bad the O2 sensor MAY give an intermittent CEL but more often than not it doesn't. The CEL code gets thrown when the O2 sensor voltage falls out of the alloted range, response time, etc and will then throw the CEL so you can see it is rare that the sensor will ride the good/bad line for long.

Well, the darn light has only come on once,so,I guess I will keep it in mind for the near future. They arent expensive so its no big deal.

On another note,I did my first seafoam treatment today.Got a little smoke but not bad.Must have been pretty clean for having 160k on it.I'll see what happens when I fire it up tommorow.
The top of the motor is much quieter! I think I like this stuff!!
I'll check fuel mileage in the next few weeks and give a report.

They say it is "recommended" that you change the o2 sensors every 70,000 miles or so, if I remember correctly. This is just to keep up maintenance.
