How do you check engine problems without a CEL?q

I have had some stalling problems with my 4Runner after WOT. I have changed the Fuel Filter, cleaned the TB and MAF, changed the Spark Plugs, checked the hoses for cracks, changed the PCV Valve, cleaned the Air Filter, added a can of Seafoam to the Fuel Tank with 91 octane, all with no change to the problem.

I have yet to replace the IAC, as it scares me to tear this 4Runner apart. It looks as though I may need to install a new head gasket as I can see a small leak, but I am not losing oil.

Plug wires are next, since mine are originals on a 98 4Runner. 2WD, V6.

The only time that it threw a CEL is after I cleaned the TB and it was really dirty. I cleared the computer and the CEL has not come back.

Is there a way to diagnose engine/intake problems when you do not have a CEL light?????? Maybe a dumb question, but I am a newbie here, so forgive me.

Ditto.....you need an OBD reader with allows you to see sensor outputs and engine parameters. There are a few out there but you need more than just a simple code reader. Search "auterra" and you should find a few models both PC and PDA based.

Few things I might try would be to replace your wires as suggested and second since you did mention a possible HG leak, you should probably do a compression test to ensure you don't have low compression in one of the cylinders. Finally you should take out the IAC and clean it because it sounds like a metering problem if the engine is stalling after WOT.

The wires are my next step. Does anyone know if any of the local parts stores sell the NGK Wires? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Do you guys suggest cleaning the IAC or replacing it? Do I need to buy gaskets? Do I need to get then from the stealership??

Thanks for the help!!!!

CELs are only triggered by problems that effect emmissions, they're not reflective of the entire operating conditions of a motor.

Advance auto(kragen) has the OBD2 you can use, there in the parking lot. you just trade for your ID, plug it up, follow directions, take it back in, and they will print it out for you.
