How do I recode a remote door lock???

Well, one thing we found out is, the remote for the door locks and panic button does not work. I replaced the battery, thinking that was the problem but NOT! Anybody know how to recode the door remote before I take it to Toyota and pay $40 for them to do it?

Been there, done that...nothing to it.

Go here and do some reading as it is too lengthy to repeat, but it is there.

https://www.yotatech.com/search.php?searchid=924084

Good luck!

You can get replacement remotes on Ebay for less than $10 and reprogram them if you need another...don't pay the dealer for the remote or reprogramming...throwing money away.

EDIT: I have the Toyota dealer sheet on how to do this on my computer at work if you want it. My dealer just gave it to me.

"waskillywabbit" Pointed you in the right direction... and I also did purchase a spare from Ebay-- best place to get them...

Here's one that I posted specifically for the 1999 & 2000 Models...

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

Hope this helps you, it did me greatly-- Good luck,

Thank you both for the info. I will try it as soon as the wife brings the 4rnr back. She went to the mountains for a couple of days, while I stayed home to get work done.

Do you guys know if this works for a 2001 also? I bought a new one on ebay for $12 and they gave me directions for a camery. This obviously did not work even though an idiot (me) tried it 6-7 times before noticing that the service bulletin was for the camery. Just not as smart as I wish I was.

Noliwan, those instructions are flawless and much better than the ones that came with my remote off of ebay.

Thanks

Talking

Here are copies of the actual diagrams from the dealer that I have...let's you have a few more options if you want to try your hand at it.

Just open, save as, print out, and then keep them for safekeeping for future use.
