hood scoop?

are any of the hood scoops that they sell at autoparts stores any good. Im talking about the ones that just go on top, since the real one is not functional and this one looks just as good why get an entire new hood. Or is it a totally different design?
thanks

its up to personal preference really. i would never get an all new hood unless insurance was paying for it.

i havent gotten an aftermarket one because the ones ive seen dont match the paint or style of the runner quite right, imo. they may to you though.

IMO, they look cheap and tacky since they don't mold into the hood like the stock scooped hood. They go on with 3M tape and look cheesy.

If you are going to do it, the only way is the Toyota hood.

I bought it for $250 for the spoiler and $110 for the special Hella lights
that go in it. It cost me about $100 to paint it. Plan on about $450 total,
and it looks awesome! Make sure to get the "rockguard" coating put on it before it's painted to stop chipping.

More pics on my page.

Please don't do put a stick on scoop, that's almost the ultimate rice job. Yes,the factory hood is ricey too but factory rice is ok and accepted.

Check out fiberglass hoods. Some of them have scoops and with a paint job they will blend in nicely.

I almost went the route of an aftermarket hood that was supposedly similar to the factory hood but decided not to since they are usually made out of really thin/cheap metal. I finally ordered a factory hood w/ scoop through a mechanic that owed me a favor...got it at cost and he painted it and installed it for free. I couldn't be happier

I wouldn't get one that has to be shipped. I know more than a few people who did this and they all ended up being bent when they got them. I know one guy who was sent a total of THREE hoods, and they all got dented or bent during shipment. These hoods are just to fragile and in most cases you are going to get a headache. Get one from a local dealer and save yourself a lot of aggravation.

That also seems too cheap at $150 shipped. Shipping usually runs well over $50 to ship a hood that big.

Yeah, if you get a stick on hood scoop, you might as well be putting on one of those stick-on supercharger blowers. Go for the real deal.

i wish i took the pics, but i saw this really thrashed old ugly K-car last year that had a hood scoop and BIG wing on the trunk....you know the racer boy kinda car stuff? it was hilarious! the guy had made the scoop and tail wing/foil out of 2x4 wood and nails.

hehe...i still laugh thinking about it.

sadly, i want to put a highlander hood/scoop on my 99'er still
