Angry Hood Insulation Pad

Hey all, my hood's insulation pad, the one attached to the underside of the hood, is badly frayed all the way around, and pulling off the plastic hold-downs, but especially at the back, the rear. Because of this, when I try to get fresh air in through the vents, I get the hot air blowing over the engine, out the back of the hood, and into the intake. Makes the AC seem weak. Not what I need. I checked the parts under the dash panel, and they all set, or actuate, correctly.

I've searched the net, and any replacement resembling OEM is $250-$300. That's a little rich for my blood!
Does anyone have a decently priced source, or a reasonable replacement? I prefer OEM if I can, but I've seen insulating/sound deadening pads, cut to fit, for about $75, give or take. Are those a good idea, or do they degrade too rapidly to bother with? Does the adhesive on the back last, or does it degrade too rapidly? Do they handle the engine heat well? They all advertise they do, but I trust adverts as far as I can throw the Incredible Hulk.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! I'm new to my 99 'Runner, and I'm trying to do the best I can to keep it in good shape.

I got mine at the junkyard because the hood I grabbed didn't have one. I go there a lot, they gave it to me for free. The original hood on the 96 never had an insulation pad.
Does the heater control valve work?

Mine started coming apart a few years after buying the truck new. Removed it and tossed it. Truck now has 491,000 miles and still runs great without it.

Does the heater control valve work?
Umm... good question. It was recently replaced with an OEM from the dealership, by my mechanic, so I PRESUME (never assume ) it is working correctly. I will go check that out, thank you for the reminder. I have a mind like a steel sieve...
Why do I have the sick feeling they put it in upside down, so that turning the control to COLD turns it fully open? Like I said, I'll check that when we get ready to leave tomorrow for a Dr's appointment I have. I looked at it, and the cable is on it, and the cable moves easily and correctly. IE: it goes full left, as I'm looking at it, when I select full hot, and full right when I select full cold. I have a funny feeling though, that if the valve was installed upside down, that would make it work backwards, no?
I'll double check that when the different temps are selected, it works as it should and get back to you.

Thanks all for your answers! I really appreciate the help.
