What caused this damage ?
What was g

nawing on the crank shaft ?

Can you post some pics that show the bigger picture?

Did you disassemble the engine or a shop?

Sure doesn't look like the engine compartments of my two 3.4 V6 equipped 4Runners.....

I asked you if it was the 4 cylinder earlier since your first pic appeared to show a timing chain.

That's the 2.7L 3RZFE motor. Not the V6.

It has two timing chains. One that runs the cams, and one that runs the balance shaft.

Not sure what would have chewed up the crank there, from the looks of it the crank pulley wasn't loose.

Was it running? If the cams seized the could shear the woodruff key and the cam drive sprocket would spin on the crank, but the motor wouldn't run.
