I had my hood replaced 2 years ago due to hail damage. Paid by insurance But I didn't even notice until recently that I don't have any padding/insulation under the hood. Isn't there usually something there?

If so, can anyone make some recommendations. Lookin to do something to make the truck more quiet.

1.) buy from a junkyard a pad
2.) but from a junkyard a pad but put some sound proofing material between the hood and the pad
3.) Other

I have no idea if you can put any type of sound proofing in the engine compartment - not sure if its fire proof.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Just bought some 8lb padding for the back.

 

would there be a problem with putting dynomat between the hood and the pad? i wouldnt think so but maybe an expert knows more....

 

I think the yellow "pad" is a fireblanket. I remember reading about it somewhere on this forum. Try a search.

The hood insulation doesnt do crap. Dont worry about it.

IMO, it just gets in the way when you pressure wash the engine.

 

I did a couple of catalogs for Johns Manville a couple of years ago and had samples of all their insulations. There was one, I think it was called Dynomat, that was used in automotive applications. I guess you could go to their web page and find some information on it. I believe it is www.jm.com. Another thing you could do it go to a stereo shop. I am sure they do insulation in vehicels, but I am not sure about the hood.

96 Runner is a right that is you pressure wash your engine, it can be a pain. It does help suppress some engine noise, but then again, it is a truck.

 

I remember someone on the boards saying it's a fire blanket. I think if you're engine catches fire, it will melt the plastic clips holding the blanket and help to control/put-out the fire. Never seen a toyota engine catch fire though.

 

^you are right, i was at the wrecking yard the other day and i saw a perfect 92 4runner, so im like whats wrong with that one, and the guy tells me engine fire, go figure. the blanket saved the hood though, ha ha.(didnt do jack for the engine)

 

Good to know that it doesn't do much for noise..... I will just continue with 8lb pad in the front (already did the back), and prolly put something in the doors and behind the panels in the back. Probably as good as it will get for an old truck....

Now that I think about it. My buddy and I made a trip from Denver to Phoenix, and he was amazed that my engine temp never even fluctuated even in the hot AZ sun. I think I will keep it off

 

My 96 does not have the "fire blanket,", and guess where I live?

If the thermostat is working correctly, your temp should never fluctuate under "normal" driving conditions anyway, including the desert.

 

I guess I should of mentioned, he has problems with his 72 Rover all the time with it overheating......
