Hi, new to the 2.7L. Need advice
Hi, Im looking at a 2004 Tacoma with a 2.7L and a 5-speed. Im very farmiliar with the older trucks and fairly farmiliar with the Tacomas and 4Runners. Not with the 2.7L engine though. Is there anything that theyre notorious for? Do they have timing belt problems too? The particular truck has 73k miles on it. Its in great shape. I think I can get it for around 10 out the door. Is that a decent price? Heres the link to the online ad: http://www.mikeerdmantoyota.com/Preo...oryId=26458352 Thanks for any help.

3rz's have timing CHAINS, and yes they need to be replaced on a regular basis as with most other timing mechanisms. I think they are good for 150K miles or so. Be aware of the exhaust manifold cracking as well. I can't remember if it is the '00-'04 Tacos or '96-'99...

but the 2.7 is not notorious for crapping out all the time like the 22R or the 3.0s belt? and theres nothing else that was bad on them? and is 10k about right for a truck like that?

no the 2.7L is not notorious for breaking its chain. I can't say what some common problems are as I don't own one
Aren't they asking a little over $14K?
I would pay 10K for it! I would pay $12K even. That looks like a nice truck.

The 00-04 3rz got a different exhaust mani thus elimnating the cracking bs. umm..Thats really about the only thing I can think of, from what I understand there pretty stout motors. Im awaing the delivery of my taco with a 2.7

Oh and rear main seals, its not a big problem, more like an underground problem.
I have known a few, including myself 2.7 owners to have the rear main seal starting to weep threw. No biggie though

they were asking like 14k or so for it. they have it down to 11k in the window now and i am thinking ill talk them down some. i hope i can get it for around 10k. i guess not many people in florida want a 2004 tacoma with crank windows, manual door locks, a 4cyl with a 5-speed. to me thats the perfect truck. lol.

I've owned my 98 4runner with the 2.7 for 5 years or so. It now has 173k on it. Its a piece of crap- in 115k miles that i've owned it, i've had to replace the exhaust manifold, starter contacts and 1 injector. (sarcasm should be noted by now!)
My 98 4runner has been the best vehicle i've owned. i just replaced the factory plug wires a couple of weeks ago. Like others have said, the newer exhaust manifold doesn't crack like mine did. It now leaks a little bit of oil, but not enough to be concerned. Last week was the first time i've had any sort of driveability with it (needed a new injector)
I change the oil every 3k, have kept the auto trans fluid fresh, and have changed all the other fluids regularily.
If your only concern is the 4 cyl, i would definitely get it, especially for the price.

I've got the 3rzfe. 222k miles. Chain never replaced. My understanding has always been it's a good thing to do around 300k. The engine doesn't burn or leak oil. Nor does it have any other issues. I've had it for a little over 6 years, and have put nearly 100k miles on it. I've always been good to it as far as maintenance. And as for driving, it has seen a good amount of high rpm mountain driving (every weekend in the winter). Recently I was at a friend's house in the mountains, and when I woke up in the morning it was -18F. Truck started right up. This thing never ceases to amaze me when it comes to reliability.

Your post is very contradicting and confusing. Its a piece of crap yet is the best vehicle you've ever owned?
Anyways, I have a 96 with a 2.7L and have zero issues. 197K and going strong!

Yeah, like everyone else has said...you should have a good truck for quite a long time. The 3rz is a stout engine but like everything else needs to be maintained. Do the maintenance and you'll do fine...hopefully you have some kind of maintenance records with the new truck?
My 2.7L is at 146k and going strong, did need a new manifold but other than that...normal maintenance and Mobil 1 and has given me almost 30k trouble free miles.
Cheers to the 3rz...
