HELP cd player... taillights dont work

I installed an Aftermarket cd player. There are three wires left over. A Green wire, a Pink wire with a stripe, and a white wire with a green stripe. The tail lights, and Dashlights and guage lights dont work! Or the front running lights..!?!? What on earth do I do. None of the wiring diagrams mention these 3 wires. If I put the white wire to the battery wire the guages light up but I am still out tail and running lights!?

those leftover wires...are they coming from the dash or from the new head unit?

I would be willing to bet that those wire's just looped through the stock stereo, that way the stereo would light up when your dash and tail lights came on. Take a meter and with the lights on see if one of the three have 12v power. If so, with your meter on the same wire that has the 12volt's, turn the lights off and see if that power goes away. If it does, conect that wire to the other two which probably run to your dash and tail light.
Hope this help's. Good luck!!

Any Ideas?

When I touch theses wires to hot..

Green = Taillights
White = Dashlights

Pink = Nothing happens...

When I touch the green and white to the hot at the same time only the taillights work but when i take off the taillights the dash lights up

The green is power with the lights on, and the white with green stripe is ground via the dash rheostat. The pink striped wire is one of the power antenna wires.

Is it just me that hates this kinda of stereo install? Dont they make nice little plug-n-play adapters? The worst thing you can do is cut a factory wire hanress.

I wish the P/O had used one on my truck when I changed head units out on mine there was a mess of wires to deal with

What year is yours? So does that mean that you still have the stock amp installed? if you put a new head unit in, chances are you dont need the amp. They make aftermarket harnesses to connnect to the amp out harness.

Off topic - but related to installs:

I've installed a couple stereos in my 2nd and 3rd gen 4runners.

This might be common knowledge, but one thing worth mentioning is that with each stereo I put in, the wiring harness coming from the head unit never matched up with the harness coming form the vehicle. HOWEVER, If you disconnect and remove the stock amp, the wire harness (coming from the vehicle) that goes into the amp, fits directly into the harness coming form the stereo. Plus the stock amp is usually worse than the amp built into the new deck. BTW - the amp is located below the stereo unit and is about 6" x4"

If you have a remote component amplifier, you CAN NOT use it, its technically part of the premium system. Like the poster before this one said, treat the input wires going into the amp as your new radio wires.

Circuit City carries plug-n-play harnesses made by Metra. It's the only way i'll ever install a new stereo.
