HELP!
Has anyone replaced the 3rd Gen 4Runner tailgate lift shocks by any aftermarket ones? OEM ones costs me over $300 CDN and I'm not too sure if I really need an OEM?!?! Your help will be appreciated.

usually you can find them on ebay for under 50 for the pair. shipping usually isnt too much either

 

I'm guessing you're Canadian since you mention the currency.

Canadian Tire sells replacement lift supports if they have a listing for your vehicle.

I got some for my wife's minivan. They were fine. I'd expect they will have one for your 4runner.

PS - For applications such as truck caps - CT is pretty useless unless you find a good counterguy who is willing to try and match it. Most of them aren't that good.

Crappy Tire didn't have them listed for my 01 4Runner, so I'm guessing they won't have a 2000. I've been thinking of trying this guy but mine aren't quite bad enough just yet.

I'm used to it. Mine sinks a little on cold days. My wife had to drive my 4Runner while I mended my broken arm. I saw it happen one morning in front of my house, she opened the hatch, reached in and backed out into the now lower hatch. BAM, of course it was my fault. I guess I need to do mine too. Off to Autozone.

 

If you cant get them through a parts store or the net, pm any of the guys who work at a toyota dealer and see if they can get it cheaper.

There are a few guys here, iirc tacozilla is one, northridge yota and such that will carry the part.

I find that those struts just wear out overtime. My mom jhas a mazda tribute and its only 5 years old and they are just about done on both the window and door, my old camry used them for the hood and they were worthless at 8 years old, seems like they skimp on this part.

 

well these gas pistons, like shock absorbers, just wear out after time. they develop leaks when the seals dry up and crack, and eventually become useless.

some are better than others. i know on the tailgate of my mom's 97 CRV died about 4 years ago. but the ones for the lift glass still work great. go figure.

the cold weather really effects their performance too. ive noticed the ones on my 4runner dont work that well right now, but when it was 85 a few weeks ago, the door would fly out of my hand on the upstroke.

 

My tailgate struts have about had it too. I don't think that's too bad for being in a cold climate for 9 years. Does anyone know the cheapest source for OEM cold weather struts?
