headlight warning buzzer
i was wondering if anyone has added a warning buzzer for their headlights before.
sometimes, i forget to turn my headlights off :pat: (not for a long period of time, thank God). So i was wondering if anyone has added a buzzer that goes off when the engine is off, the lights are on and you open your door to get out of the car.
thanks!

My 93 4Runner has this stock from the factory. Have you thought about an auto-shutoff circuit? My Celica had this and my Maxima has it. I was thinking of doing this on my 4Runner. All you need is a relay or two...

lol you have the same problem I have with my 90 pu. I would do the same thing, I'm just afraid I'll walk away without looking at it like I always do and leave them on. An auto shutoff feature would be nice I would be very interested in working one of those out for my truck.

awesome. once you get it working, when I get the time I will put it in my truck and post picture by picture etc on my site, hopefully that will make me pay some money and get a non-free host.

Same problem, cameout of work to a dead battery once. ANyway, saw a little kit at Wal-Mart (EVIL) that you can add a buzzer to the circuit by sliding a sleeve over the fuse and connecting to the light... Am thinking about gettig this myself..

i could put my 4 years of electronics class in highschool to work and build it but i just don't have the time at the moment between school and work. This weekend i think i've posted more than in the past month just cause i've been doing my homework on the computer and will periodically take a break and check the posts in my inbox.

What's better?
OK, I did a little reading and figurin' this weekend. We can do this a few ways.
1. Lights go off with keys.
2. Lights stay on after keys come out, but go off when driver door is opened.
3. Lights stay on after exiting the vehicle via a timer circuit for 30 or 60 seconds.
These are listed in level of complexity. Any preference?

thanks!!

see I was thinking something similiar about what if i wanted to turn on the lights without turning the truck on... Why not just add a switch to enable or disable the circuit. And the easiest one would be best, less parts = less failure. Learned that when I built my timer for physics.

Bypass
I was thinking the same thing about a bypass circuit in the event of a relay failure, you still need lights, right. Ideally, I'd like to set it up so they auto-shutoff when the key is removed and the door is opened. I've got to figure out how to make the circuit reset itself so we can turn the lights on without the key afterwards. Guess I need to do some more noodlin'

On my 2000 4Runner if you leave the lights on they go off when you open the door and come back on when I start it back up. I don't know if some one modified it or it came this way I bought it used.

I'm guessing it came that way, alot of new vehicles do.
Heh, after this week and next week I might have time to noodle around with something 1 final down and I think I got two next week.

Bob,
You guys with the new rigs have got all the cool stuff. I don't know why early 90's trucks and 4Runners don't have that feature. I had an 87 Celica GTS that had it. It's not exactly a new idea, gotta mod... That GIF can stand for soldering too, right?

I am playing around with a VW chime relay to go in since I lleft the headlights on several times, all I have to fo is find a diagram of how it wires in to the Jetta or Golf and I'm all set.

If someone comes up with a source of a chime that doesn't cost too much and isn't too irritating I'm interested in knowing what it is. I have a 2000 4Runner so I don't need the headlights to go off, but I left the door slightly open after parking it in my garage once and didn't notice. I went to start it a few days later and the batt was dead from the dome light staying on as far as I know. Anyway, I'd like to come up with something not too irritating to remind me.
On my old non-Toyota pickup I added a really irritating buzzer for a headlight reminder, but had to add a defeat switch for times I wanted them on because it drove me nuts. Thats susceptible to forgetting to switch it back when done. FWIW, I ended up hooking one side of the buzzer to the headlights, the other to the switch in the door (closed to ground when open) through a diode for a pretty simple setup.

My brother's '90 Runner (SR5) has a buzzer/chime from the factory. He said part of it was under the ashtray (behind the cover). Does anyone know what parts I would need to add to my truck to get this feature?
Cebby, did you ever get a circuit together?
