While the tranny is out, I figure its a good time to tackle headers. What headers bolt up to the factory y-pipe? From searching it seems that the TRD and Downey ones are out. Oh yeah, must be CARB legal.
Coating is not that important to me because I plan to wrap them.

Edelbrock's will after you weld a flange on the downpipe to the cat. If any moisture gets under that header wrap, you are going to regret it. By the time you wrap them with DEI material, you will be darn close to HPC cost. Coating is way better. But to each his own.

With the tranny out, the install will be just about as crappy. Not only that, but you wont be able to bolt up the secondary cross-under system until you put the tranny back on anyway. The only benefit to having the tranny out is going to be getting the cross-over off in one piece and maybe a tad bit more room under there.

Edelbrock's are CARB legal. They may not make them for your vehicle though. Check with Summit Racing if you are interested; they have the best price and free shipping.

And for the record, I don't recommend headers due to the hassle and bang for the buck. A SC'r is way better. Unfortunately all the costs associated with a proper SC'r install leave you with few other options.

I don't know. I am still on the fence about my headers. As you can see.

 

Thorleys?

 

I saw a "group buy" on the site here for ceramic headers, naksukow(wing chun, anyone ?), so you may want to do a little searching and perhaps get hooked up that way.

 

Thorley doesn't make a 3.0 header. Or at least I have found no reference to one, and tons of places selling the 22RE Thorleys. (Assuming from the posts above we are talking about the 3.0)

edit: just read the posts about the Hopefully Soon To Be Released Thorley 3.0 headers.... Hopefully they will be as value-priced as the other Thorley headers.

No header manufacturer will warranty a header with wrap.

 

yep, header wrap will cook a header. from the inside out.

 

Heat wrap still keeps the heat down in the engine bay better than any coating. I am aware of the trade offs.

I just want to know if anyone has first hand experience in headers that bolt up to the stock y pipe.

RE: Header Wrap.

After you see how much fun it is to install the headers, you will wish you didn't put the wrap on the first time you need to pull and patch the hole (or replace them).

 

I installed/helped install headers on many cars....one install took three days. LOL. Quality stainless steel headers with good welds won't fail, even with header wrap. And if they do I replace em. Or pay some poor bastage to do it for me.
