Header question

Howdy...

Well I am in the buying mood lol... just bought a magnaflow muffler... and a high flow carsound cat from ebay... and am gettin a new cam and timing chain kit from engnbldr probably tomorrow...

I need to buy one more thing before I'm done... and I want to get it now lol... I am lookin for a header... I looked at Downey and LC Engineering and both are in the high 300's...

Who here has a Thorley Tri-Y Header? Or has seen one... been in a ride with one... or just knows anything about them... are they just as good as the Downey and LC? I did some searching and read about everything on here but just want to see if anyone else has gotten one so far...

Thanks a lot!

Ian

I have never seen a header that was as nice as the ones from LC, they are really awesome. I would also recomend their cam, and timing chain kits - the steel guides or double chain one.

I've got a Thorley tri-Y header. I have had it for 6 years or so. It has never been a problem. It has given me more power.

I've got a LCE stainless header, I agree that they are nice. But, I've heard that the Thorley headers are also good. I don't think you'd be at all unhappy with the Thorley. For me it was between the LCE and Thorley and just decided to go LCE because I will eventually end up with their cam (maybe a whole head) and assumed that if anything would be matched, it's got to be a LCE header and cam.

Something to note, dunno if you've noticed that the Downey and LCE are 4-to-1 headers and the Thorley (and NWOR) are tri-Y. Supposedly the difference is that the tri-Y helps develop more torque lower in RPMs than a 4-to-1. The stock R series manifold is basically a tri-Y setup. I haven't noticed a loss of low end power with the LCE, which is sometimes said to be a side effect of 4-to-1. But I did immediately notice the engine above about 3800 RPM had a bit more pull. But, afterall, we're talking about a 22R-E that not going to mistaken for a small block, so it's all relative. Really, it's all sort of academic, but just wanted to point it out. In the end, putting just about any well built header with an appropriate exhaust is going to help the engine breath better and that's a good thing.

Oh, also, Summit Racing sells the Thorley header, might be about the best price and I've been happy with their service so far.

From what I have herd, the Tri-Y header works best on a 22R and the 4:1 design (like LC uses) is a little better on the 22REs. I have the LC header and it has worked great over the last 6 years:

Ok thanks a lot... great info so far... got another question... doesnt anyone know if the Thorley will just bolt right on... or do you have to modify it a little?

What would you rate them with all the other headers?
LC-first
Downey-second
Thorley-third
or what?

Also they have Nickel Chrome for $179.95...
and
Steel, Ceramic Coated for a wopping $291.99...

Is it really worth it to go with the ceramic coated?

Ok I guess my main question is.....

Why in the heck would you want to pay like 100 more dollars for Ceramic Coated headers?

Why not just get the Nickel Chrome...? Whats the difference?

Is it just cuz the ceramic doesn't rust and stays looking nice?

Or what?

Yeah the LCE is not cheap at all lol... I am really thinkin about this Thorley... only thing I am worried about is on the Summit Racing website it doesnt say anything about them having an O2 sensor which I need...

I did call them and they said that they do have O2 sensors and I was asking about the pictures by the headers and they said that they probably weren't the right ones? So thats kind of weird...

From looking at their website over at Summit Racing I am really confused... they show like 5 different types of Thorley headers... they all say like the exact same thing but are all different prices...

DTE-542Y-O Thorley Tri-Y Headers
Headers, Tri-Y, Steel, Nickel Chrome, Toyota, 4Runner/ Pickup, 2.4L, Kit
Today $189.95

DTE-542Y Thorley Tri-Y Headers
Headers, Tri-Y, Steel, Nickel Chrome, Toyota, 4Runner/ Pickup, 2.4L, Kit
Today $179.95

DTE-542Y-SO Thorley Tri-Y Headers
Headers, Tri-Y, Steel, Nickel Chrome, Toyota, 4Runner/ Pickup, 2.4L, Kit
Today $219.95

DTE-542Y-S Thorley Tri-Y Headers
Headers, Tri-Y, Steel, Nickel Chrome, Toyota, 4Runner/ Pickup, 2.4L, Kit
7/28/05 $209.95

Whoever has a 1st generation 4Runner and got one of these Thorley headers which one did you get? Only difference is the end letter on the item number thing...

Thanks
Ian
