Header and exhaust Q's

Hey I'm thinking about the downey headers for my '91 3.0L V6 4x4.....would it be better to have a muffler shop fabricate the new exhaust or buy a complete performance exhaust with Cat and muffler......I'd ratter spend a few hundred more dollars if the performance difference is gonna be supper noticable.

Ive been on this board for awhile and have seen a few posts where people have put headers and bigger exhausts on their 3.0 and were dissapointed at the results, the 3.0 was not one of toyota's better designs, heck my 2.7 4cyl puts out 4 more HP, im not sure on torque though. Im not saying to not do this, but dont expect that 3.0 to become a top fuel dragster, about having the exhaust made by a muffler shop vs. buying one, i would lean twords the aftermarket kind, one thing that i do know is that most muffler shops dont have a mandrel bender, but most aftermarket exhausts are mandrel bent, so if you want a little more performance, i would go with aftermarket because they will flow slightly better

Drill out the airbox for some noticeable gains.

there is an exhaust place up by my house, in fact my truck is there now. I got the downey headers for my 22r and have put 3 gaskets on. they all leaked. the guy at the shop said he will have it sealed for 150 and he couldnt figure out why it was leaking. I did everything right. He said maybe downey sent the wrong ones or the header is warped. Either way he said it would be fixed today.

Be carful with Downey, and id have a shop put it on for ya.

I just drilled out the air box and I've noticed right away the change...but I think I'm still gonna go with the installation, I mean let a pro go and do it.....and all I want is for it to be able to go up hill without me getting behind it to push.

Where exactly do you drill on the airbox and what size holes?

an aftermarket catback is no better than what a shop can do... For example, you can get a magnaflow muffler, and run new piping, and it'll be no worse than the cat-back that magnaflow makes. In fact, when you consider the shop can make it to your specs, you may value the custom-setup more... Especially when you can get stuff that they don't have catbacks for -- such as a Flowmaster.

Just make sure it's mandrel bent!
