Has anyone filled up their gas tank and have problems like me every few cent it clicks then takes you forever to fill up the gas? I have a 2002 4runner. Any suggestion.Thanks in advance

 

You might want to back the nozzle out of the filler neck a little, use your judgment here. My wife's Catera was highly prone to causing the nozzle to shut off prematurely if the nozzle was pushed all the way in. I'm talking almost immediately. If you backed the nozzle out an inch or so you had no problems.

My biggest problem is getting the tank completely full. If I quit when the nozzle first shuts off, my tank isn't really full. So what I do after the nozzle has clicked off the first time is to back the nozzle out of the filler neck an inch or two. I listen for the gas to finish draining from the filler neck into the gas tank. Then I squeeze the pump handle so gas flows slowly from the nozzle and I listen to hear the gas as it backs up in the filler neck. This method usually gets me about another gallon, maybe a little less, into the tank. It seems like the tank/filler neck design, when the tank is almost full, allows the gas to foam up enough and causing fuel vapors to back up, making the nozzle to click off.

 

I have the same thing going on with my 2000. Like 99Limited said, I just barely stick the nozzle into the filler neck, just enough to go through the little flap and hang there by itself without having to stand there and hold it. I also make sure I continue to fill after the first click or I don't get a completely full tank.

I have the same problem with my 67 Mustang. The new nozzles that seal on the tank inlet don't work well with older cars (and yours apparently). You can manually pull back the rubber boot that seals on the tank inlet if it is that type of nozzle. Same thing when filling a gas can. Perhaps one of the vent lines for your gas tank is kinked?

 

Thanks for the replys This happens to me when I barely start fill up though. I tried barely putting the nozzle in doesn't work.Does anyone know if this is a car problem or a gas pump problem?Anymore suggestions from anyone?Thanks in advance....

 

This is sometimes a side effect of having stale air in your tires. you should take it to the dealer and let them swap it for some fresh stuff.

 

I think it's mostly a pump problem. Where I go there are lots of pumps and one in particular causes this to happen to me. I just avoid it.

But it does happen to a smaller degree on other pumps too - one of the tricks I've found is to let the nozzle rest against the top side of the filler tube - if you jam it all the way in it rests on the bottom side of the tube and is susceptible to any backflow, shutting off the nozzle.

lol same thing with my 78 Ford F-250. I have manually press the lever. Its a pain since it has a 25 gall on and a 15 gallon tank!!

So maybe there is something about the gas filler neck that tends to close off the hole or splashes gas into the hole. Another possibility is the hole is partially clogged making it more sensative to pressure changes?
