Frame Rust

While dropping my gas tank for the fuel pump upgrade for my 96 4Runner, I found some serious rust on a truck that shouldn’t have rust!!

When I removed the bolt that mounts the side of the gas tank skid plate to the frame rail, I found that the end of the bolt was corroded to a point. On closer examination the frame rail at that point appears to be corroding badly – as if the inside of the frame is retaining water. If I took a pick hammer I bet I could chip a hole in the frame. It seems that it won’t be too long before the frame integrity becomes questionable.

Has anybody else seen this problem?

Bob - Yes, you have to drop it.

MTL - I'm not sure if my camera still works. I'll check it out.

on my 1993 pathfinder the frame rusted really bad in the rear... the last time i filled it up with fuel the frame couldnt take the weight anymore and crushed down. It ended up taking out the fuel lines and brake lines. That was the end of the pathfinder, but then i bought the 4runner. So all ended well, besides now being in debt for it.
