I have a 91 4Runner. I was looking through my friends manual for his xterra and it said someting about driving in 4 HI once a month to keep everything working correctly. is that a good idea for my truck? I don't want to wear it out or anything. winter is approaching and i am just starting to wonder about it.

 

It won't hurt anything as long as you do it on a loose surface. It's something that I do as well. Usually if I don't have an off-road trip planned I'll just take it up the local mountain for a quick 40 minute round trip just to keep everything lubed up.

 

if you have manual hubs, you can leave them unlocked and drive around in 4hi on any surface to do the same thing

 

With ADD you can still usually do it on a very straight stretch of low-speed road (like through a neighborhood). Just run it for 50' or so, it doesn't need to be too far.

 

Or you can lock the hubs and stay in 2WD to do the same thing. The idea is to move all the front axle parts around, so they don't dry out, keeps the seals lubed as well.

Or bettery yet, get the thing off-road and wheel it like it was built to do!!!

 

I states the same (engage once a month) in my manual (3rd gen). So I do that on a piece of straight road just to keep things lubed

 

Yup, the manual for my Taco specifically says you should drive with the hubs locked for at least 10 miles per month. If you have ADD, it says to drive it in 4WD for at least 10 miles per month.

Naturally, I haven't been doing this. Man, I need to go offroad more often!

 

i just put mine in 4 hi when i go to the lake, its easier to pull my ski out, and it lubes allt he seals up . i go to the lake about 3 times a week, so it gets lubed good

 

not to hijack but along the same thing, i hadn't gotten offroad in a while so i locked my fronts and drove around town for a little bit. When i brake, the front vibrates like crazy when im braking to a complete stop. then i free the hubs and its fine. whats going on up there to cause such a bad vibration?

 

I usually run mine in 4HI about once a month, also. There is a 10 mile stretch of relatively straight country road on my way to work that I do it on, but I always do it on a rainy day. The manual says not to run it on a dry surface, if I recall.

 

the front and rears brake at differnt speeds, and with the power trying to go to both, they cant, so its something getting shaken up as play..... normally the front driveline differentiating from the rear

 

thats not possible because his transfer case is in 2wd, if i read his post correctly

 

ya, the transfer case is in 2wd, i just have the front hubs locked.
