Flexfan: Plastic vs. Metal?

I also heard it was recommended to use a diode between the pos and neg lines on the fan to reduce the load on the relay at fan spinup.

I am running a stock alternator right now as well. Since there are 2 speeds, I will try the slower speed for now, and then later, after I upgrade my alternator and get the 80 amp relay, I will hook up the high speed wire then. No big deal. It does fit the radiator very well (in my 3rd gen 3.0 V6 pickup that is)

Ahhh, well no. No extra diodes, switches or relays needed. There is an inline fuse...but that comes with it.

So is the Flex-165 the only direct bolt in or is there another fan from summit that is as capable and cheaper? Part numbers are appreciated. And also, is the 17HP gain posted there for the V6 or is some general rule they pasted up there and really only like 3HP is gained? Thanks

I too am interested in converting to an electric fan, but I don't have the funds for the Black Magic. Anybody have the years and possiblly the part #'s for the Taurus/Sable fan? Also does anyone know if the single speed from the 3.0 L fords would be enough, if you can't find the 2-speed from the 3.8 L fords?
Any help would be great. And I could look for more than one if anyone else want's one.

Here is some more info on the Taurus fan:
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...an/index.shtml
http://www.broncoii4x4.com/taurusfan/taurusfan.htm
These links probably have all the info that you will need regarding the fans. They are from the 88-95 3.8L V6 Ford Taurus/Merc Sable(mine is out of a Merc) and I also read that they had them in the 3.0 V6 Ford Tempo's. For the price, there really is no reason to get the single speed fan from the 3.0 V6 Taurus/Sable.

Great links!......that fan controller was what I was looking for.
It is nice that they put something together like that so it is easier to get installed than trying to find all the parts yourself and assembling one.

I am doing mine today after I get off work... (yawns) and when the auto shop opens on base at noon. I will take pics for sure. I still need to track down the 150amp relay and a couple jugs of coolant since I am removing the radiator. I have to remove me 16" electric fan first though. I will post the install pics later this afternoon.

I read that the high current draw is only at the STARTUP of the fan. after it gets going it draws 40A. I have run my truck with all of the lights blazing and the stereo blaring so I am not too worried about it. I will let you all know for sure though!!

That's true....high draw comes to accelerate the motor to full speed (same as in a car......you don't need 300HP to cruise at 55MPH do you?) Also all electric motors act like a heater until they begin to spin in order to dissipate the energy (has to go somewhere!). Ever felt how hot a winch gets when the load is too heavy.....hot enuf to cook an egg! If the motor spins up quickly like a rad fan then very little becomes heat and the load on the electrical system is very minimal but may have a high peak value.
