Here's a pic of my 2002 SR5. No mods yet. Any suggestions where to start?

Let us start with a question to you - do you want it to be an off-road, on-road, or some of both rig?

Then, we will know how to start making suggestions

Ditch those tires ASAP man. Your Runner will take on a whole new appearance with larger tires. Also wind deflectors for the windows are cheap and a bug guard really spruces up the front. Of course this is only the beginning!

To answer the question of on or off road, I'll say on road for now. In reply to ditching the tires, what would be good replacements?

My Michelin LTX M/S are great on-road, and perform pretty good off-road as well. Get yourself some new shocks - Bilstein or OME. Try a new cat-back exhaust, deckplate mod, Amsoil air filter....and oh so more!!!

Do a search on tires there has been numerous discussions on the best. In fact there was just a poll going on recently here

Ya, completely depends what you want to do with it. If its primarily going to be a pavement dweller, then I'd do the factory painted fender flares, I think it does alot for the look of the truck. But, if your going offroad alot, frame sliders/lift/wheels/tires would sure make for a nice looking 4runner too!

Factory painted fender flares are big bucks. What about Bushwacker flares painted to match the color of the truck? Also, since I have the stock tires and wheels, will the Extend-A-Fender flares look funny? Bushwacker also makes an OE Style flare which isn't as wide. I think it's comparable to the "old" black factory flares that are no longer available through the local Toyota delaers here in Eastern MA and Southern NH.

Is it 2WD?

Looks like a 2WD Runner to me. Am I off-base?

it's a 2002? should you have the same rims as me? I thought only the 2002 Sr5's would have the same rims, although I have seem those rims on older 4runners, or I could be wrong

Matt:

Where abouts in MA are you?

As for suggestions, like the other guys said, it depends on what path you want to take, the off-road or on-road path and performace vs. looks. Also, what's your budget?

Regardless of which path you take, the deckplate mod is a good one to start with to get a little more power. Buy an Amsoil TS-115 oiled filter but keep your old one too.

Tires also might be a good start as I think your tires are stock and on 15" wheels. I am not sure if you need to regear to put on 16" wheels (I think so, if you considered that) but you can get bigger tires that are better for the snowy conditions out in MA.

As for the fender flares, yes they are expensive. Look online. I get most of my stuff from partznet.com.

What's up guys? Just got back on line here and am able to reply to some of your questions. Cebby, my rig is 4WD. Does it really look like a 2WD rig to you? Must be because of the stock tires and wheels. I'll have to work on that. Sleepy1405, it's definitely a 2002. I bought it brand new in July. I went with the SR5 because I didn't have enough head room in the Limited because of the factory moonroof. Otherwise I would have bought the Limited instead. I wonder why our wheels are different? Maybe it's because you have the factory fender flares(?). Hi Bob, we've chatted before. I'm in Northeastern MA near Lowell. Remember now? As you can see I've been procrastinating since I bought this truck as far as what mods to do first. It's going to be a pavement dweller (for now). So I guess appearance and performance are what I'll work on first. What mods are inexpensive to begin with?

I suppose it could be because of that fender flares, I had one upgrade package and stuffs, with probably different rims , well I don't think your rig will look like that for long with all the mods you can do to it, I think my runner stayed stock for like a week and that was it

Here's my new truck a 2002 Nissan Xterra XE-V6 4x4...

I know, I know it's not a Toyota. But it is currently modless. I actually just ordered a set of Weathertech side window deflectors so those are going to be my first actual mod to it The next thing I'd really like to get is a set of All-Terrain Tires (I'm probably going to get some BFGs) and I will hopefully also get a set of Bilsteins for it some time in the near future because the stock shocks are just a bit to soft for my taste I'll probably wait until it's out of warranty to lift it, but as it is it rides fairly high (same height side by side as my '91 4Runner with it's 1-1/2" Downey HD Rear Coils and cranked torsion bars. But I like how the Xterra is stock... for now Unfortunately buying it has taken a good sized bite out of my wallet So the mods on it are slow coming

I'd definitely look into some bigger tires (if that's what you want to do of course) and if you want to do some offroading I'd look into getting some all-terrains and some new shocks (My preference is Bilstein because they handle great and they have a lifetime warranty)

Definitely the wheels/tires

Matt,

I was thrown by the wheels/tires. Juice them up a little and there won't be any mistake about it. Here's a recent pic of mine.

Hey it's no Xterra, but that's probably OK for this TOYOTA board. I'll post my Maxima pics soon . Don't get  Braden, I'm J/K...
