FIELD MONITOR UNIT - update w/ pics

Field Monitor Install in 1997 3rd Gen
Thanks for the write up, I have just installed mine in a non-sunroof model. A couple of points worth bearing in mind...
My Surf already had the loom and connector for the outside temperature sender, however I did have to obtain the sensor from a donor vehicle. It's attached just behind the left side front bumper utilising a hole in the inner wing. (I will refer to left and right as I'm in the UK, so left side would be our passenger side (right hand drive).
On the factory fit, all the wires for the sunroof and field monitor follow the right hand A pillar. The wires all plug into a connector that is situated behind the instrument cluster (speedo etc.) on the tubular bar.
Hence no need to pull off the centre dash to get to the clock or to feed wires through the bulkhead to a temp sensor. If you can, grab the connector off the donor vehicle otherwise use red skotchloks.
The wire colours all seemed to match the Field Monitor colours although I connected the Field monitors ignition live to the grey wire on the connector behind the dash as this was the first switched 12v I found!
The temp sensor wires are Yellow with black trace and blue with silver dots, same as the Field Monitor.
Don't tap into the ABS, use the green wire with violet trace on that connector block - same as the Field Monitor colouring.
Finally be careful cutting the headlining, don't overdo it or you will have gaps.
The metal support bracket sits above the headlining at the rear edge.
Total of five wires needed to behind the dash, that's it. This saves time as only one pillar cover needs removing and you don't have to feed wires to the front or to the clock illumination. It's all there waiting for you!
Good luck

Whats up blcktpgsr. I have a question. Did your FMU come with the male (white) FMU connector? I purchased a FMU (non-moonroof version) from a guy on FB. Everything looks good but it didn't come with the male FMU connector I need to make that harness with. I'm trying to find a similar male connector you show in your photos but I haven't had success yet. If anyone can help please advise. Thanks in advance!

If that is the connector to the main wiring harness, then you don’t need the connector at all. Just splice into the wires. The other end of the white connector is mounted on the steel tube behind your dash (instrument) panel (right hand drive vehicles). Just match the wire colours from there. Just check first that it doesn’t plug into the field monitor itself. It’s been a while since I did this mod so I can’t recall. Best of luck.

Fm connector
Looks like you may be missing it then. Unfortunately I no longer have one to get a photo for you. If no-one can help come back and I will ask my brother in law for a photo of his.
can you post a picture of your fmu and it’s wires/connector please?

Yes'r it is missing. Thanks, but there is no need for a photo because like I said, it is the female connector in the first (blcktpgsr's) photo with the DIY notation "white FMU connector" which I am missing and I need/require to make the wiring harness that needs to route down the A pillar, etc,. The male connector shown in the bottom photo is from my FMU which I obviously have because it's part of the FMU's assembly. I'm not going to pull on the FMU's harness to expose the wires if that's what you're requesting. I don't want to chance breaking any of the contacts on the PC board below the black casing. All of the wiring photos are shown in blcktpgsr's photos. I'm going to wire it exactly how he wired it because I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, LOL!
