factory gearing questions

ok...heres the dilemma...my 1995 pre-tacoma ext cab pickup has the 3.0L v6 and the five speed manual tranny, when i got it about six months ago it had whatever size tires the doorplates on these trucks all seem to read (225 something or other)... just a light truck radial michelin tire all around...bought this truck from an old man who just drove it back and forth to town to get feed and such in for the farm... well i get the truck and immediately notice the speedo is way off... its readin too fast... so i buy a set of 31x10.5s firestone destination m/t's (that i absolutely love by the way, great traction, minimal vibration) this fixes my speedo getting it back to its normal calibrated reading... heres my question...ive been reading back thru some posts on the factory gears and different rear ends these trucks come with...and how to identify them...looking under my truck, my rear end has four fins on it...tada...a four pinion rear end right? not according to my doorplate...my gear/rearend code is the G254 which from what i have found would mean i have 3.90's witha 2 pinion rear end...in an sr5 v6 4x4 ext cab pickup with literally every option possible from the dealer...i dont get it...what size tires did my truck come with from the factory? the 225junk or the 31's...and whats up with these gears, i dont really notice any acceleration problems, its no sports car but i can pass and accelerate just fine...somebody help me clarify this mess...sorry for the long post...

check out 4crawler.com, he has some charts that will help determine your actual gearing. there are other ways to figure it out, search around in here for the rear diff gearing etc and you should find everything you need. welcome aboard!

G254 is code for 8" ring gear, 4 pinion, with 4.56 gears.

Yup - that's exactly right. You have 4.56 gears in your 3rd Gen P/U. That's what G254 stands for. The G, and 25, and 4 all mean something. The
G means 8" ring gear, the 25 means 4.56, the 4 means 4 pinion, non limited slip. If you had G294 it'd be 4.10's.

having 4 fins on the outside of the case does not mean a 4 pinion rear end....

with G254, you should be running 31" tires with 5 spd. That's the stock for that yr. I had the same on my 4runner....a while ago...

My stock '95 came with all the options available minus leather and I had the 4.88's with 31's and it would push 33's..OK..passing was still ok, took some higher RPM's and QUAD-FRIGGIN-DRUPLE the gas! But highway driving...you might want to get where you want to be and just stay there til your exit comes up.
