Expert Needed Power Steering Confused!!!

Hey guys,
I am having a major PS leak. This is not the pump or resivor the previous owner replaced those. The leak come from a "BOX" on the lower passager side. This "dox" is mounted directly to the frame. The local parts place and the FSM nor the Haynes shows this box. What the hell is it? I lnow that the PS lines go into it however it appears that some other line run through this thing too. I tried taking it of to look at it What a bitch...I abandoned the project due to lack of line wrenches. I observed a little plastic piece on the bottom of this box where the PS is leaking from. Someone please give me a clue to what this is and if there is a rebuild kit avalable. For the experts...here is the VIN JT3VN39W4R0146743

Assuming it is a 2nd Gen, It sounds like the power steering gearbox?
You should be able to get a reman unit from a parts house (Carquest,Autozone, etc).

Did the PO do something custom maybe? Do you have an idler arm on the Pass side? Let's see pics!

The box on the passenger side is for the ABS brakes. It uses the power steering fluid to actuate the ABS.

So if the power steering fluid is low, would that cause any problems with the ABS? Mine seem to lock up rather quickly on slick or even slightly damp roads, and I know I have a power steering leak somewhere also.

Not sure, never had ABS myself, but one sure way to find out. Dump some ATF in there (not power steering fluid) and see if it gets better. May also be the load sensing proportioning valve on the rear axle. If you have the classic 4Runner "butt sag", then that fools the LSPV into thinking there is a ton of weight in the bed and it increase the rear brake pressure to compensate. However, if there is not really weight back there, that could make the rear brakes more prone to locking up.

Do you have a local Toyota dealer? Might be worth a stop there to get an estimate on the repair. Do you have a local brake shop? Might be worth a 2nd estimate there. Or try a junkyard (http://www.car-part.com/) and see what the going price is for that part.
